Gale DePriest Obituary

Our beloved father, and grandfather Gale C. DePriest of Pateros, Washington, died peacefully April 14, 2024, at the age of 80.

He was the youngest of two sets of twins born in Longview, Washington on September 7, 1943 to Ralph and Eva (Elliott) DePriest. He graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1961. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he married the love of his life, Susan A. Phillips, in 1968.

During his youth, Gale grew up working on the family farm where he learned his strong work ethic that he carried with him for life. While growing his family, Gale graduated from the University of Washington and began his lifelong engineering and managing career with Peter Kiewit Sons Construction Company's Seattle District office. They moved with the construction projects, living in Seattle, Vancouver, WA, Tri-Cities, Yakima, and back to the Seattle area. If you are in the Seattle area, you have experienced the impact of Gale. His contribution can be recognized as we drive over the I-90 bridge and into the Mount Baker tunnel, the I-90 & I-5 interchange, the Sears building, as well as many other projects in the greater Seattle area. He also managed projects in Alaska and Hawaii including the Princeville Resort in Kawai. One of his last projects before retiring was managing the construction of Safeco Field.

Gale enjoyed traveling to Alaska where he loved to fish at his brother's lodge. After retiring, Gale and Sue settled and enjoyed their treasured Alta Lake home in Pateros, living the "lake life", where their best friends, extraordinary neighbors, children, and grandchildren loved to spend time with them. Gale was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying his Huskies and the Seahawks. He enjoyed playing golf with family and friends, cribbage, and poker with his Pateros and Brewster buddies.

Gale is survived by his children, Terry DePriest (Lisa), Debbie Crisler (Mark), and Gary DePriest (May); his fraternal twin brother, Dale DePriest (Jeanett), and sister, Jackie Soleim (Dave); his granddaughters, Haley DePriest and Morgan Crisler; grandsons, Nic DePriest, Dillon DePriest and Nolan Crisler; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Sue; sister Sue Urie (Burt); and his older, identical, twin brothers, Dean DePriest (Harriett) and Gene DePriest (Jo).

Private inurnment held at Tahoma National Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in memory of Gale to the American Legion Post 97, PO Box 946 Brewster, WA 98812-0946.

I was sitting here today with my wife and Gale´s name popped into my head (over a hilarious story he told me that is not appropriate for this message board) and I thought... I wonder what that legend is up to these days. Gale was a mentor to so many people and I got the opportunity to work with him on the I90 Sunset Interchange where he quite literally taught me everything I know about heavy civil construction. He taught me with grace, a humble spirit and a care and compassion that was only outweighed by his drive to execute work while taking care of the people that make it happen. Rest easy my friend. As Sue's cousin, I met Gale at Grandma's house not too long after Terry was born. There were family gatherings at Uncle Leo's house when Sue and Gale were in town. I am thankful that Steve and I got to go visit them at the lake house a couple of years ago. They were both such neat people. Much love to you Terry, Debbie and Gary.
