Mavis Evans Obituary

Mavis Evans

February 2, 1933 - December 22, 2024

Mavis Ann Hegedus Evans (91) of Vancouver, WA passed away at home, surrounded by family, on December 22, 2024. Mavis was born in Fargo, ND on February 2, 1933, was raised in Bismarck until her move to Rainier OR in 1947. She graduated from Rainier High School in 1951 and worked for AT&T and Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Co. in various positions. Mavis married David Evans on August 31, 1963 in Longview, WA where they resided for over thirty years before divorcing.

Mavis was a very creative problem solver. She was an accomplished seamstress, particularly loved gardening, an enthusiastic diy-er, an avid reader, and enjoyed expanding her knowledge of history, health, cooking, design, finance and investing. Mavis was adventurous and curious and always encouraged others to travel and learn about the world. She canoed the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, canoed the Bowron Lake circuit in British Columbia, sea kayaked the Pacific Ocean, and canoed various other lakes and rivers while married to David. She traveled to China, Peru, India, Egypt, Hungary, Germany, Russia, Mexico, as well as many US locations. Her last international trip, fulfilling a lifelong dream, was to Cuba at the age of 83.

Mavis was an optimistic, faith-based believer. She was generous, hard-working and self-sacrificing - beautiful, inside and out. Her first priority was always her family. She was a great mom who encouraged her daughters and grandchildren to pursue their dreams. She loved visiting and laughing with family.

Mavis is survived and greatly missed by four daughters: Elizabeth Newman (Jim), of Kalama WA; Jennifer Hill (David) of Kenmore WA; Rene' Estes, of Kalama WA; and Amy Noe (Matt) of Vancouver WA; six grandchildren Debbie (Brent), Jessie (Eric), Dehne', Christopher, Krystina, and Isabella; and six great-grandchildren: Caitlin, Jackson, Samantha, Graham, Ren, and JW. Her sister Charlotte Hammond and brother Ed Hegedus survive her at their homes in Oregon, as do many nieces and nephews.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents Stephen (Steven) John and Thelma Elizabeth Hegedus; her brothers Don Hegedus (Longview WA) and Jack Hegedus (Bismarck ND); her sister Lorraine Thompson (Portland OR); and two brothers and two sisters who passed as infants.

There will be no service at her request. Donations in her honor can be made at https://donorbox.org/wadhh to benefit the deaf community at Washington Advocates for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
