Robert Dean BaumgartnerApril 16, 1911 - November 26, 2004Robert Dean (Bob) Baumgartner was the second of five children born to Phillip and Adeline Baumgartner on April 16, 1911 in Kansas City, Kansas. He passed away on November 26, 2004 in Longview. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Howard and Harold; and his beloved wife, Mary Stratton Baumgartner.Bob moved from Kansas City to Longview in 1936. He had worked for Robert A. Long in Kansas City and came out to work in Mr. Long's lumber mill, Long-Bell. He became a supervisor/checker at the Port of Longview until his retirement in 1977.Bob married the love of his life, Mary, on June 5, 1937, one day after she arrived from Kansas City by train. They were married in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Bob enlisted and served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He attained the rank of sergeant. He was a member of
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, a 32nd degree Mason affiliated with
the Afifi Temple, a member of Scottish Rite, Longview Elks and the Sunrise Lion's Club. After his retirement he frequently volunteered his time to the Salvation Army, making coffee for weary travelers at rest stops along I-5, and as Sergeant-at-Arms at the state capital in Olympia. He also volunteered his time reading to children at local grade schools and helped to actively raise funds for Shriner's Children's Hospital in Portland.Bob loved to read and was a history and foreign language buff. His pastimes were drawing painting and calligraphy. He won a blue ribbon at the Cowlitz County Fair last summer for a sketch he had done of a scene from the old west. Robert is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Bob Luoto, granddaughter, Marisa Butterworth, grandson,
Kirk Luoto, and great
grandson, William (Liam) Butterworth all of McMinnville, Oregon; two sisters, Grace Tucker and Jean Haley both of Kansas.A funeral service honoring his life will be held at Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home on Friday, December 3, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. Viewing will be held between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 2004 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Shriner's Children's Hospital, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239.
