Sandra Manthe Obituary

Sandra Jean Manthe, loving wife and mother, passed away July 8, 2009.

She was born Jan. 2, 1942, in Portland, to Margaret and St. Clair Spence. The family moved to Longview in 1945.

Sandy attended local schools and was in the top 5 percent of her graduating class from R.A. Long High School in 1960. She attended Lower Columbia College and graduated in 1962 with an associate in arts degree. That same year she married Bob Manthe, the boy that she announced in fifth grade would be her future husband. They lived in St. Louis, Mo., where Bob attended dental school, but they came back to the local community to raise their family. Together they opened a dental practice in Castle Rock. They also owned, and Sandy operated, the Castle Rock NAPA store for many years.

Sandy was an avid reader, never without a book. She was an accomplished pianist. She was a devout Catholic and was the choir director for several years at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Mission in Toledo.

Sandy had a quick wit and a great sense of humor, never missing the opportunity to laugh. She loved the beach, especially the clam tides. Sandy was very patriotic and was always moved to tears when hearing the song, "Stars and Stripes Forever."

She was an excellent cook who always had room for one more at her table. Sandy never missed any of her children's sporting events, concerts, and school activities. Above all, she loved her family. She was a faithful and loving wife, a devoted mother, and an incredible grandmother.

Sandy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dr. Robert W. Manthe of Toledo; her mother, Margaret Spence of Longview; her children and their spouses, Shawn and David Taylor of Mercer Island, Wash., Ram and Teresa of Longview, Christian and Kimberly of Castle Rock, and Spence and Erica of Sherwood, Ore.; her grandchildren, Alex and Nick Taylor, and Thomas, Steven, James, Jacob, Lucas, Greta and Maximus Manthe; her sisters, Susan Spence Riley of Lakewood, Wash., and Sally Spence Ellis of Sonora, Calif.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and an aunt and uncle in Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her father, St. Clair Spence, in 1986.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday and a requiem Mass at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Frances Xavier Mission, 139 Spencer Road, in Toledo with a reception following the service.

Arrangements are by Fir Lawn Funeral Chapel.

Dear Bob and Family,
I have known both Sandy and you for an awfully long time. I have a hard time accepting that Sandy is no longer with us.
We shared a lot of good times growing up in Longview and, although we have gone our separate ways, I still remember those times fondly. My prayers are with your family and you.

Your friend,
Jim

I was sad to learn that Sandy had passed away. We certainly were long-time school mates and I hoped to finally reunite at our upcoming 50th highschool reunion in 2010, My thoughts go out to Bob and Sandy's sisters whom I also remember with respect. May God be with you all.

To the entire Manthe Clan,
Sandy truly touched my life. Like a second mother she seemed to own me and be there for me in my youth. She always had a smile and something witty to say. She seemed to have ESP and always knew when I was up to trouble. In fact, now I think about it. She also would have a look that made me have to think back to see if I had done anything. I truly loved her and my deepest thoughts go to Bob, Shawn and all those other rascal Roberts.
I have lost touch over the years but my love and prayers hopefully will find you.

Cousin Bud and family,
We were truly sorry to hear the news about Sandy. She was a fun person with a quick smile. She was also a very good sport and hostess of the "Schwegler" family reunions held at your Toutle River home. I remember the first reunion when you were just beginning to have your home built. (I think that was about 34 years ago) You were living in a trailer but you and Sandy were excellent hosts to your guests. You made the most of it. Give our condolences to your family and know that you are in our thoughts.
Love,
Cousin Lucy (Hermiston, OR)

To Suzi, her family and the Manthe family:

It is hard to find the words to express ourselves upon learning of Sandy's sudden death. We knew her as Suzi's older sister who did such a good job as wife, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. What a loss to all. May the love of family and friends, your memories and God's Grace carry you through this difficult time.

With love and caring, Gary and Aina (Grods) McCormick

Dear Family -

As I pack and prepare to head to Longview tomorrow, so many thoughts and memories are running through my head!

I don't think it has really sunk in yet - not sure when it will.

I just find it hard to believe that I won't hear Sandy's husky "Hello" again.

But I know that even if I don't understand, I must accept. And I am working on that!

I am looking forward to giving and receiving wonderful hugs from all of you!

All my Love -
Sally

I am so sorry about your loss of Sandra know that I am keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Bob,
Shawn, Ram, Chris and Spence

We’re sure that everyone is shocked and speechless over your loss of Sandy. I’m glad that I got to chat with her just recently as I hadn’t seen her in a very long time. She always had ‘kid’ (Tracy!) stories from Blauser Road. She was much too young and still greatly needed and we’re extremely sorry. We certainly wish that sorry was sufficient, helpful and could fix your pain and return to normal; but, otherwise, we hope that all of the “I’m sorrys” will be comforting to ease you through this most difficult time.

Dear family, this news is met with great sadness. Your daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother was a wonderful person. She was mother to me of sorts (college fraternity/sorority stuff). The times I got to spend with her and her husband and children are some of my best memories. I am proud to call her mom and love her very much, as I love all of you.

I am deeply saddened by your loss and obviously a loss to many others. My memories of Sandy are growing up on 24th and 25th Street, as a younger girl looking up to Suzi's older sister in awe. She was sooo together. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

July 14, 2009

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. As children at R.A.Long, we never realized the journey we would take in this life. Having experienced similar loss, I know that in time the good memories, and the times that brought laughter will dominate and the hurt, though never completely gone, will lessen.

To Mrs Spence and family
I was so sorry to hear of Sandra's passing. We went to school together, and were in the same home room. She always was smiling, and so friendly. I worked at the Girl Scout camp with you all, (Peaches from the kitchen) It seems God always takes the best for his service.
You all are in prayer and thoughts

Dear Bob and family,

Sandy was only a day older so I always kidded her about it when we went to Kessler, Monticello Jr High and then, sadly, we separated to different high schools. Her mom was my girl scout leader and I always looked up to Sandy and knew she was going to marry you, Bob. Please know our prayers are with you and your family at this time.
