Andree Cohen Newman

Andree Cohen Newman, 90, of Martha's Vineyard and Shrewsbury, died September 30, 2006 of heart failure. Andree was born and raised in French North Africa, in the city of Oran. After the Allies liberated North Africa from the Nazi occupation in 1942, Andree worked for the American Army where she met a young officer, Robert A. Newman. Andree and Bob were married in July, 1944, and lived together in Oran and Casablanca until 1946 when they moved to the U.S. with their six month old daughter. Since 1946 they lived in Washington, D.C., Manhasset, New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, Milford, New Jersey, Martha's Vineyard, and Shrewsbury.

Those who knew Andree, were enchanted by her elegance, creativity, and determination. She was an accomplished painter, a talented cook and dressmaker, and a natural decorator, but in her own words, her greatest achievement was to have "raised a family that loves each other so much and is so talented."

Andree is survived by her devoted husband Bob and by her daughters, Carole Allen of Arlington, MA and Faye Crosby of Santa Cruz, CA, her son Jim Newman of Los Angeles, CA, her grandsons, Matthew Crosby, David Allen, and Tim Crosby, her granddaughter Abigail Allen, and their spouses and partners.

Andree was under the care of UMass Memorial Hospice. There will be a memorial service at Southgate at Shrewsbury at 11:00 a.m. on October 14th. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to UMass Memorial Home Health and Hospice, 650 Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
