Daniel Murley Obituary

Daniel F. Murley, 70

Timber Cove, CA - Daniel Francis Murley passed away at 70 in Timber Cove, California, Tuesday February 27th of natural causes. He is survived by his wife Sandra Hollimon, two daughters, Hannah Murley, 26, of Corvallis, OR and Oona Murley, 24, of Manhattan, NY. He is also survived by 6 siblings and their spouses: Jeff and Maureen Murley, Mary and Dennis McGee, Dr. Joseph and Mary Murley, Michael Murley and Cindi Collins, Ellen and Tom Mirarchi, and Sheila and Tim Herbst. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, MA to James and Elizabeth (MacDonald) Murley on December 19, 1947.

Danny, as he was known to his friends and family, received an exemplary Catholic education culminating with his graduation from St. John's High School in 1965. He then received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1969, later earning a Master's Degree from San Francisco State University in 2003. A Vietnam era veteran, he served in the United States Army in Germany where he earned top security clearance. After completing his military service, he pursued a fruitful career with California State Parks. The bulk of his nearly 30 year career took place at Fort Ross State Historic Park. It was here that Daniel indulged in his scholarly research with focus on Russian America, and particularly the Native people of Alaska. He emphatically expressed his love for the field in realms both academic and public. An avid naturalist, ornithologist, and photographer, he spent most of his time outdoors leading hikes, gardening, and pursuing his passion for archaeology, which is how he met his wife Sandra. Following his retirement from parks he became the Curator of the Healdsburg Museum for 6 years.

Dan was a man of many hobbies and interests. His passion for music began in his youth as a choirboy and could be heard throughout his life via constant recitations of his favorite lyrics as well as his own compositions with his songwriting partner Terry Hartman. Their songs were influenced by the likes of John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, John Prine and more. A wordsmith and poet in his own right who wrote a weekly column for 35 years, he loved the writings of Billy Collins, Edward Abbey, Robert Frost, and Jack London. He will be remembered for his inimitable sense of humor and mischief, which brought a smile to most everyone he met and will undoubtedly endure.

Of his many accomplishments, his proudest role was that of father to his two daughters. His greatest joy was sharing his passions with Hannah and Oona who carry on his legacies in photography, poetry, and music. A beloved friend, brother, husband, and father, he will be sorely missed but fondly remembered.

A celebration of Dan's life will take place in May of 2018 on the Northern California Coast, and in October of 2018 in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Daniel F. Murley to St. John's High School, 378 Main Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

My sincere condolences to Danny's family and friends. I am just now learning of his passing through the UMASS Magazine. I had the privilege of knowing Dan in the late sixties at the Amherst campus. Always full of life and loyal to his friends, I new he would find life success in his own style.

AEKDB my friend.

My condolences to Dan Murley's family. I worked with Dan when I was a park ranger. I admired him for his even, calm and warm demeanor, depth of knowledge and that great Dan Murley smile. I knew that when I called for backup and Dan was there we had it covered. We will miss you Dan. You have left a wonderful legacy.

I loaded a 70's picture of Dan and Tom. The photo says it all, them were the good old days. He lived in a small state house below Folsom Dam. Those were the days when everybody was single and bulletproof. Some good times and I even remember a few. A loss to this world, a bonus to the world hereafter, a great guy and a good soul.

To all the Murleys, I feel like a chunk of my childhood has been taken away. Because we have such wonderful memories, our hearts are tender. And during times of such great loss, we see how vulnerable we are. Danny was such a fantastic kid with great wit and yes, with exciting mischief. I just know his path to heaven was direct. Remember tonight as you look up at the night sky, Danny is on the other side of the brightest star smiling at us. And although he is at peace and very happy, his greatest moment is yet to come. That time will arrive when the rest of his family passes through the gates of heaven with incredible energy and enthusiasm and once again share each other's love. Sincerely and with fond memories, Tom Stone

I first met Danny in the early 1980's when I was living with his good friend Jeff Barr. I was dispatched to Logan airport one summer evening to pick him up for one of his annual visits to Worcester. This "friend of Jeff's" quickly became a friend of mine as we shared a love of history and nature and story telling. Thereafter, I often acted as his chauffeur driving him from Logan airport to Worcester. Even time spent in "tunnel traffic" seemed to pass quickly in his presence. My condolences to all who loved him.

Dan was in our Ranger Trainee class way back in 1973. He is such a memorable character. A bright, funny and caring fellow. He was a man of high energy and great love for the people he served. We send our condolences to his family. A great loss indeed.

My condolences to the Murley family. I knew Dan "the man" during the 60's, hanging out at St. Charles and listening to Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich as well as watching I Spy with my brothers in the basement of our home. Danny was a good guy, funny and a great sense of humor. May he rest in peace.

I knew Dan through his beautiful love of Sandy and as father to Hannah and Ooona. His caring and positive presence was a joy.

Dan always had a twinkle in his eyes when he'd talk about his passions. I loved hearing about his research and about ranger life, his intellect and humor on full display.

Wishing comfort to all of Dan's family and friends. He is sadly missed and will be fondly remembered by all of us.
