Donald Lytle Obituary

Dr. Donald F. Lytle, 93, retired principal of Brookline's prestigious Edward Devotion School, died Thursday, February 14, 2008, in his home in Hubbardston.

Dr. Lytle was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of William A. and Thyra A. (Johnson) Lytle. He leaves his son with whom he lived, Bruce A. Lytle and his wife Cheryl; two grandchildren, Ava and Keira Lytle; and sixteen nieces and nephews.

Dr. Lytle graduated first in his class from Fitchburg State College in 1938. He earned his M.Ed. from Boston University, and did advanced work at Harvard and Columbia and was honored with a Staley Doctorate in 1953. He was a teaching principal in Hubbardston from 1938 to 1946; an elementary supervisor in Cape Cod from 1946 to 1948, and supervising principal of Brookline's Edward Devotion School from 1948 until his retirement in 1971.

Dr. Lytle was active in a variety of organizations; he served as the pioneer editor of MESPA, a quarterly publication of the MA Elementary Principals Association. As a citizen of Hubbardston, he served two terms as town moderator, served on both the local and regional school committees, was a library trustee, and most recently was a member of the council on aging.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 2008 in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. The funeral service for Mr. Lytle will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 18th in the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
