Ester Mark Obituary

Ester (Holmstroem) Mark

Holden, MA - Ester H Mark, 83, of Holden, MA passed away peacefully at home, on Thursday, August 7, 2014, surrounded by her loving and devoted family after a brief period of declining health.

She was born October 30, 1930 to August and Marie (Oja) Holmstroem in Rapla, Estonia.

She is survived by her five children: Dr. Victor W. Mark and his wife, Sandy, of Birmingham, AL; Dr. Karen I. Mark of Bloomington, IL; Loraine K. Marinone and her husband, Dan, of Holden; Kathryn M. Pellerite and her husband, Peter, of Leominster; and Pamela A. Waugh, and her husband, Bill, of Eureka, MO; and stepson Eric Mark of New York, NY and 9 grandchildren: Joyela Cooper; Adam, Ryan and Amanda Pellerite; Timothy, Michelle and Renee Marinone; and Brian and Amy Turlington. She was predeceased by her brother, Henry Holmstroem in 2011.

Ester was employed by Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, NY, as a chemical researcher for almost 30 years. She cherished the annual family Thanksgiving celebrations in which her children and grandchildren from throughout the country gathered to celebrate this special time together. She enjoyed reading, handicrafts, gardening, and keeping in touch with loved ones in the US and her beloved Estonia through letters, phone calls and Skype. She regularly attended worship services at Holden Chapel, and loved reading her Bible each day. She was fluent in several languages and liked learning and communicating throughout her full life. She participated in the Pen-Pal program at Mayo School for several years. A generous soul, her final gift was the donation of her body to the UMass Anatomical Gift Program to further medical research and education.

The family would like to thank VNA Care Hospice for the excellent care and comfort given to Ester during her illness.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at a future date. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org/donate) or to Holden Chapel (279 Reservoir St., Holden, MA 01520).

Pam, my heart goes out to you and all of your family after the loss of your mother. I am glad, though, that you were able to have her with you for so many years. Thinking of you.

To The Mark Family
My name is Tyler Moran and I had your mom as a pen pal from Mayo School in Holden, when I was in the third grade. We have kept in touch over the last four years. I wanted to tell you that I am very sorry for your loss. She was very special to me. She came to several shows of mine. I will be for ever thankful for knowing such an amazing lady. My deepest sympathy to all of you at this very sad time.
