Forrest Jacobs Obituary

Dr. Forrest A. Jacobs

AUBURN - Dr. Forrest A. Jacobs, formerly of Auburn and West Chatham, Massachusetts died on Sunday, March 5, 2017, in New Port Richey, Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley (Holbrook); son, Glenn, and his wife Leslie, of New Port Richey, Florida; two granddaughters, Tara Johnson and her husband, Robert of Tampa; Amy Gee and her husband, Brian of Toronto, Canada; three great grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner and Teagan Johnson of Tampa; sister, Sylvia Alden, of Concord, New Hampshire; nieces Janet Wilson and Judy LaRochelle of New Hampshire and nephew, Peter Alden of Massachusetts. His son, Wayne, predeceased him in 1966.

Dr. Jacobs, a lifelong resident of Auburn, Mass. until moving to New Port Richey, Florida in 2011, was educated in Auburn public schools and graduated from Tufts University's College of Dentistry. His dental practice in Worcester, Massachusetts was interrupted by time in the Panama Canal Zone, where he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corp. He resumed his 45-year practice after building a "bungalow" office in the Tatnuck section of Worcester in 1952.

He was a member of the Worcester Dental Society, the Massachusetts Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

He was a 50-year member of the former Chestnut Street Congregational Church in Worcester where he served as a church schoolteacher, a member of the diaconate, the search committee, and men's fellowship. When the church merged with the United Congregational Church in Worcester, the same dedication continued as it did when he returned to his boyhood church, First Congregational Church in Auburn.

He was a volunteer for Rachel's Table for many years and the Mustard Seed of Worcester. He was a member of the board of Camp Putnam, New Braintree, Massachusetts.

He served as commissioner of Auburn Hillside Cemetery for 25 years, was a town meeting member for 10 years, a charter member of the Kiwanis Tennis Club, and a member of the former Worcester Tennis Club.

The building of the cottage at Hardings Beach in West Chatham in 1960 began his deep love for Cape Cod, its sunsets, clamming at Bucks Creek in the "backyard," early morning swims in Nantucket Sound, clambakes on Harding Shores and cookouts on the patio overlooking the Sound.

Burial will be at a later date at the Hillside Cemetery in Auburn, Mass. at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Dana Farber Jimmy Fund at the following link: http://www.jimmyfund.org

My deepest (albeit belated) condolences to this wonderful Dentist's family and closest friends. Me and my family had the great honor and experience to be dental patients of Dr. Jacobs as we lived less than one-half mile from his bungalow office. I had many pleasant visits there for either routine cleanings or even damage repair, and the good Dr. was always professional and made a sometimes difficult repair as painless and reassuring as possible. His assistant Lucy was great too. I actually felt guilty as I grew older and my teeth were fine year to year, and not going back to see him more often before he finally retired. He also sent me a nice note when I did a special article in the local newspaper around the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Worcester Tornado (2003). The subject of that article was a ham radio operator and WWII old timer--Herman R. Sanborn, W1LC--also a patient of Dr. Jacobs. So kind and thoughtful a man was Dr. Jacobs. I previously attended the Congregational Church next to his office there, and was glad to see he was very involved with his own church life. On this Easter Sunday and always, may his family and closest friends be assured that through Christ we will see this kind soul once again in the world eternal to come. Thank you, redeemer Jesus, for your gift of salvation, eternal life and God's gift of this beautiful human life to us here on earth for a short while. Rest in Peace, Dr. Jacobs.

Dr. Jacobs was a very giving, thoughtful, and loving person. I had many good times with his family down the cape as well as at the Church. Mrs. Jacobs and Glenn, I am so sorry for your loss. Hard to believe it has been a year.

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Jacob's passing. I recall the good times we had fishing, swimming and having fun on the Cape when I was growing up. I had much respect for Dr. Jacobs and will always remember him fondly. May he rest in peace.

On behalf of his many friends at Hardings Shores (Chatham, Massachusetts), we express our deepest sympathies to Shirley, Glenn, and the rest of the Jacobs family. Forrest was a pillar of our Cape Cod community and we were all sad when he and Shirley moved out of state but we know he and Shirley added significantly to his new Florida community.

I would like to express my sympathy on the passing of Forrest . I had the pleasure meeting him on the Tennis Court at the Greendale YMCA 30 years ago. We became partners on occasion when he and Frank were not playing singles. Forrest also was my sponsor for Membership at WTC. He was a great man and great Tennis Player
