Frances M. McConnell
WORCESTER - Frances M. (Friend) McConnell, 84, died peacefully Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Knollwood Nursing Center surrounded by her family.
She leaves her husband of 65 years, Robert C. McConnell; four children, Robert C. McConnell Jr. and his wife Margaret of Shrewsbury, Mary E. McConnell-Meachen and her husband Daniel G. Meachen of Woodbury, Ct., Elizabeth A. McConnell and her husband Russell P. Heard of Brentwood, N.H., and Stephen F. McConnell and his wife Elizabeth of Worcester; two sisters, Ann Goodrich and Kathleen Friend, both of Mt. Dora, Fla., a brother, Paul Friend of Oxford; twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Her daughter, Patricia M. McConnell, died in 2010. Her sisters, Margaret Hanson and Patricia O'Connor, and her brothers, William, Daniel and James Friend, also predeceased her.
Frances was born in Worcester, daughter of William and Anna (Butler) Friend, and lived in Worcester most of her life. For many years, she spent winters in Fort Myers, Fla.
Frances was a graduate of the David Hale Fanning Trade School for Girls in Worcester.
For ten years Frances lovingly cared for hospice patients in her work with the Visiting Nurses Association of Worcester.
She was a former president of the Parent Teacher Organization at St. Nicholas Ave. School and volunteered for many school activities when her children were young.
Frances lived her life committed to social justice. She participated in a 1989 march in Washington, D.C. with the purpose to "Mobilize for Women's Lives," and would have participated in the Jan. 21, 2017 March for Women had she been able.
Frances loved birds, gardening and singing with her sweet voice.
Calling hours are Sunday, January 29, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be held Monday, January 30, from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
