Gary Overvold Obituary
Marlborough - Professor Gary Eldon Overvold, Ph.D, age 80, died on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at his residence in Marlborough.
A Professor of Philosophy at Clark University in Worcester for 45 years, Overvold resided in the Worcester area most of his adult life. He loved cars, music, tennis, and traveling, particularly in Europe. The most important aspect of his life was his family, especially being a loving and devoted grandfather to his five grandchildren.
Overvold is survived by his daughters Heidi Soneson of St. Paul, MN and Kristi Armstrong of Belmont. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kyra, Zoe, Nicholas and Abigail Armstrong and Adam Soneson Brown, and his sister Janice Duoos of Spokane, WA. He was predeceased by his son, Geoffrey "Brendan" Overvold.
At the request of his family and due to current Covid restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, his family kindly suggests that donations in Professor Overvold's name be sent to Clark University to support Clark Fund Scholarships, Attn: Clark Fund, Clark University, 950 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01610 (web: alumni.clarku.edu/make-a-gift, email: [email protected]).

One of my favorite Clark University professors. Saddened to learn of Professor Overvold's passing. Clark is the poorer without him. I think of him muchly.

I was in your Existentialism course when I was at Clark in the late 1970s. I still have the text with the Brancusi sculpture on the cover.
You were the heart and soul of that department.
I will never forget Professor Overvold. May your memory be a blessing.

Farewell to you, childhood friend from Middle River. I recall your purple and black Model T that could hold eight teenagers and several standing on the running boards. Practically the whole class! Again, fare thee well in your next adventure.

Some of my fondest memories at Clark are with Dr. Overvold in the Philosophy House. His commentaries on Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, his willingness to engage with students, and his approach to European history illustrate the depth of his thinking, his heart, and his vision. I still have my notes and critical readings, which I peruse every now and again. To you, Professor! Thank you.
