George Murphy Obituary
GARDNER/SOMERVILLE - George F. Murphy, Sr., age 83. Veteran, US Navy. Born and raised in Somerville, longtime resident of Gardner and lived the past three years in Chicago, passed away peacefully March 3, 2013.
Loving father to George "Geof' of Plattsburgh, NY; Michael of Worcester, MA; Patrick of Chicago, IL; Marybeth (Murphy) Hay of Whitinsville, MA; and Moira (Murphy) Dargis of Chicago, IL. Predeceased by wife, Mary Ellen (Sliney) Murphy, mother, Anna (Kelleher) Murphy, father, Daniel C. Murphy and brother, Daniel C. Survived by sister, Rosemary (Murphy) Gannon of Naples, FL and Cornelia Wyldestarr of Boston MA. Proud grandfather of Conor, Eoin, Sheila, Jonas, Oscar, Ellen, Anna, Amelia and Brigitta. Uncle to many nephews and nieces.
Beginning his career at GTE Sylvania, George left the industry and became a college professor in the Business Department at Mount Wachusett Community College. He later founded and chaired the Business Administration Department of Fitchburg State College for over 20 years, until retirement in 1995. George was an active parishioner at Sacred Heart Parish in Gardner for over 35 years.
Funeral procession from the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway, Somerville MA Monday morning at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Clement Church, 71 Warner Street, Medford at 10am. Visitation Sunday 2-6pm. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's name to any of the following: Rainbow Hospice Ark, 1601 N. Western Avenue, Park Ridge IL 60058; One Million Trees in One Day, INFF, Manch Estate, Ballineen, Co. My condolences to Professor Murphy's family. Professor Murphy did well by me as a student in his Business Policy & Strategy class at Fitchburg State College. He also allowed me to transfer some credits from QCC at a time when I needed the help. Cheers and thanks to you Professor Murphy.

I have the great pleasure of having one of Mary Ellen and George's daughters (Moira)as a dear wonderful friend and former student. George, his children and grandchildren opened their hearts and homes to me and made me a part of their loving family. George will live on in all of our hearts and memories while enjoying life eternal in heaven.
