Hendrik DeMoor Obituary

Hendrik deMoor, 86
Worcester, MA - Hendrik deMoor, longtime resident of Worcester, MA passed away surrounded by his family on August 26, 2012 in Millbrae, CA at the age of 86. Hendrik was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where he was raised and completed his Lyceum studies in business and languages. When he was a teenager, the outbreak of World War II forced him to delay his studies and he joined the Dutch Underground Resistance against the Nazi occupation.
When the war ended, Hendrik immigrated to the United States with his parents, Jan and Marianne deMoor, sisters Alice and Greta, and brother Jan. Hendrik was drafted to serve in the US Army during the Korean War, and was stationed at Fort Baker in San Francisco, CA. He returned to New England in 1953 to complete his studies in Accounting at Bentley College, and became a CPA. Most of his career in accounting, auditing and finance was cultivated at Norton Company (now Saint-Gobain) in Worcester, MA, where he held several positions including: Internal Auditor, Norton International Regional Controller for Latin America and Canada, and Manager of International Auditing for Europe, Latin America and the United states.
On one of his business trips to the Mendoza, Argentina office, Hendrik met his future wife, Magda Castellvi in November 1960. They reunited the following year when she came to Harvard for graduate studies. And in 1962 they were married.
Hendrik loved nature, and outdoor activities from fishing and hiking, to beach-going and skiing. He helped found the Hickory Hawks Ski Club in Glen, NH over 50 years ago - the renovated railroad station club still thrives today. He valued his friendships and stayed connected to his friends and colleagues from here and all over the world. He was always game for a lively discussion on controversial subjects, and did not shy away from a good political debate. He enjoyed listening to classical music and opera, especially with a glass of fine cognac and a cigar in hand.
Above all, Hendrik was a family man and was dedicated to enjoying life with Magda, his children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. He instilled in his family an enthusiasm for life, and to appreciate challenges, opportunities, and adventures. He inspired us to be positive, stand up for principles, and do good in the world. Community service was important to Hendrik, and he served on numerous volunteer Boards, including the Greendale YMCA and Centro las Americas in Worcester.
Hendrik is survived by his wife of 50 years, Magda; his three children and their spouses: Paul deMoor and Susan Rolfe of Berkeley, CA, Ingrid deMoor and Luther Kitahata of Hillsborough, CA, Karen deMoor and Tom McCook of Moss Beach, CA; five grandchildren: Garrett, Andrea, Andreas, Nicholas and Amelie; as well as his sister Greta Henry of Peabody, MA, and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
A private ash scattering ceremony at sea will take place in San Francisco Bay. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 15 at the Cyprian Keyes Club in Boylston, MA. If you wish to join us at the Celebration event, please send an email to [email protected] for further details.

I joined Norton Company in 1965 in the Internal Audit Department and worked closely with Hank. We travelled together and went skiing at Sugar Bush in Vermont. I have lots of fond memories of our 20 years at Norton.
I know how proud he was of his family and I know he will be missed by all who knew him.

Magda, Paul, Ingrid and Karen,

He was a great man, a wonderful person and a dear friend to Joan and I for the many years that we knew him. As I said at my retirement, he was one of only three persons who ment so much to me as a mentor in my careers. We laughed much and often and he never did catch on to Erwin Diesler freezing his favorite gin before serving.

We have lost a man's man; a gentle giant. God bless each and everyone of you, keep you safe and shine his light on your lives.

Dear Magda, Paul, Ingrid and Karen,
I was so surprised to hear of Hank's passing. My father and I were just speaking about you all about 2 weeks ago. We were laughing about some of the stories that would come home with after a Norton trip.
Please know that the memory Hank DeMoor will always put a smile on my face. I just loved to hear his voice when he would come to visit and I would find ANY excuse to get out of homework just to hear him talk of you all .
Much love,
Kristina (Niehaus) Carbone

Dear Magda, Paul, Kristen and Ingrid
Sad to hear about Hendrik:s passing, but as my mom would have said, he lived to a good age and enjoyed a good life.
I will always remember the generous hospitality he offered to me and the other members of our department at his home on Richmond Ave. over those many years
Hope the angels welcome him into paradise with the most beautiful music and provide the requisite cigar and glass of fine brandy. i was thinking of "In Paradiso." Doesn't get much better than that. Faure's may be the best version. Let Hendrik decide which he wants to hear.

Dear friend "Hank":

You were a good friend and great teammate as we partnered conducting specialized audits around the globe.  And I was blessed with the additional benefit of an incomparable traveling companion who shared my love of laughter, adventure and risk.  My sincere condolences to Magda, my daughter's language mentor, and to Hank's family.  I am very sad.
