James Bazoukas Obituary

James C. Bazoukas. 60

Worcester - James "Jimmy" C. Bazoukas passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on December 25, 2014 at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Full of life, laughter, and a wonderfully unique sense of humor, Jim gave unselfishly to his children and family, his friends, his church, and his causes. You knew Jim loved you if you were the object of his jokes or received one of his very early morning phone calls. He was a problem solver and got the job done – whether at the homes of family and friends or the restoration of St. Spyridon Cathedral.

Jim leaves the love of his life, his wife Sandra (Shocas) Bazoukas, and his beloved children, Michael of Peabody, and Alexis Bazoukas Halfmann and her husband William of Worcester. He was a loving Papou to his cherished grandson, Charlie Halfmann. Jim is also survived by his loving mother, Katherine Bazoukas, his brother Nicholas and his wife Mardia Coleman, and his brother John Bazoukas. He leaves his uncles, cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law, a nephew, nieces, and countless dear and lifelong friends. His father, Charles, predeceased him.

Jim was born in Worcester. He graduated from Doherty High School and Worcester State College. Jim was employed by CVS Corporation for 31 years, and retired as District Manager in 2010. He married Sandy in 1980 and they raised their children Michael and Alexis in Worcester. Jim and Sandy were always together and relished time spent with their many close friends. Jim was most devoted to his family, and happiest when helping them.

Reflecting his pride and love of his Greek heritage, Jim was an active member of the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and volunteered countless hours there. He was a past member of the Cathedral Board of Directors and a member of the House Committee and the Building Committee. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Cathedral and the renovation of the community center. Jim was a member of the Order of AHEPA and the Enosis Epirotic Society. He was Treasurer of the Board of Directors of Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Treasurer of the St. George's Hellenic Benefit Society of Tsamanta.

An excellent chef, Jim generously cooked meals for others to enjoy - from elaborate holiday meals for large gatherings of family and friends to his newest venture, making baby food for Charlie, his much-loved grandson. He was a fun grandfather who delighted in playing with Charlie and riling up his grand-dog Lennie.

Jim had a wide-ranging love of sports that included golf, racquetball, fishing, and playing cards with his long-time close friends. He was a loyal Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He loved spending time on Cape Cod with family and friends.

Jim's death is a tremendous loss to his family, friends, and church. We are forever grateful for the light and love he brought into our lives.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 30th, from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with the service at 11:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, December 29th from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral Endowment Fund, 102 Russell Street, Worcester MA 01609.

Sandy,
Wow, it's been so long since high school. It seems like a lifetime ago. I have fond memories of all of us (you, Donna, Kathy, Sandy P. and me) at Alternative School. I heard about Jimmy from my mother. I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you and your whole family. I remember Jimmy fondly from Doherty. I can still picture him in the cafeteria, always a smile on his face and always a funny line. My thoughts are with you. Love, Gale Shankman

Sandra, we are so sorry to hear about your loss.
I didn't know James well, but whenever I saw him with you and your children he always smiled, was joyful and had a positive outlook, a sign for me that he was a very happy and contented man.
We know that you and the children will miss him, but his memory and his smile will always be with you.
Please accept our sincere sympathy.

Oh my dear Sandy,

I was away and JUST heard the news this afternoon. Stunned, speechless not believing this could be so and on Christmas day.

I remember a few months ago driving by to find you two out with Charlie. Jim had so much to teach him.

I know God has a greater plan for each of us. We now know Jim's. The hard part is living with it. My heart aches for you but I know you have the great love of so many family and friends - and you have Charlie and your faith.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully Mom and I will drive by someday (maybe more in the SPRING!) and see you and Charlie out for a walk !

Love, Kathye Kelly

Jim was a dedicated, effective, personable and highly respected leader in the Worcester community on multiple fronts - a reliable source of sound advice and considered, effective guidance. He combined this with a deep sense of loyalty and responsibility - to his fine family, to his church, and to his successful career. Jim truly lived his life for the well-being of others; he was a fine role model for those of us privileged to have known him.

A light has been extinguished in Worcester with the loss of a fine gentleman, especially in the Greek community, but not from the hearts of many who knew Jimmy Bazoukas at one time or another. Dear Sandy....so terribly sad for us to hear of your tragic loss across the miles. My husband and I send our thoughts and prayers to you, your children, family members and friends as you struggle with this tragedy. Jimmy left a positive mark on this earth by his remarkable dedication to helping and serving others and loving such an incredible family. I, for one, have fond memories of his welcoming smile as a young teen during my first bus trip with the GOYA group to Fenway Park (circa 1970!) which feels like yesterday, and, in later years, as he faithfully volunteered his time at the Greek Festivals. A friend to many....then, now, and always. This was his legacy. So many share your grief. Most likely, he left you with peaceful memories. Let his LOVE be your guide in the future because your love was eternal. You two were always a special couple. Words cannot ease the pain but good memories of his life may bring a smile, and, in time, even some laughter. You are all in our prayers during this time of bereavement. May his memory be eternal.

Sandy and family,
Do not have the words to describe our sincerest sympathy for all of you. Know that in the days ahead you will have much love and support from all of your family and friends. Jimmy has touched many people and left us with the greatest memories. He was a caring , funny guy, and loved his family. We are so happy that although it was a short time , he experienced the joys of being a Pappou! It is unfair that he was taken away far too soon and so abruptly. May God bless all of you and give you strength in the days ahead.

We will always remember you

I really got to know and respected working with Jim when I arrived back to Worcester from Manhattan over 10 years ago. He was a devout Orthodox Christian, loved his Hellenic legacy, proud, and devoted Steward who participated any time or any place he was asked to help. He was one of the key members of the Family Center Building Committee offering his expertise in all aspects of the planning, design, reconstruction and construction of the project, owing a lot to Jim for its majestic outcome. He was passionate, outspoken and yet a fair man, loved his wife and loved his children and would bend over backward to be there for when he was needed. You NEVER heard one bad word about anyone from his lips. We will greatly miss him a true Archon, but feel peaceful knowing he probably is in heaven showing Joe Cocker how to play the Bouzouki...love and Light, Christina, Thomas and Emanuelle Andrianopoulos, and George Cancelmo
