Joan Conroy Obituary

Joan E. Conroy

Worcester - Joan E. (Sullivan) Conroy passed away at home on Thursday, August 26th after a long illness. Joan was a lifelong resident of Worcester. She was the most beloved wife of Robert L. Conroy to whom she had been married for 57 years prior to his passing in 2011. She was the only daughter of the late Cornelius P. and Beatrice E. (Croteau) Sullivan. She leaves her children; Christine Muth of Alexandria, VA, Robert L. Conroy, Jr., of Worcester, Joan (Mehrdad) Habib of Norfolk, MA, Nancy Conroy of Worcester, and Neil (Denise) Conroy of Medfield, MA.

Also, grandchildren; Emily Muth (Bradley) Gravolet of Reston, VA, Laura Muth of Portland, OR, Kian (Amanda) Habib of Boston, Cameron (Doria) Habib of Watertown, MA, Sarina Lugo of Foxborough, MA, and Sean, Matthew and Zachary Conroy all of Medfield, MA.

She leaves great grandsons Cyrus Lugo of Foxborough, MA, and Kayvan Habib of Boston. She was eagerly anticipating the birth of two great granddaughters later this year. She also leaves numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers; Ronald Sullivan and Cornelius Sullivan, Jr., mother-in- law Veronica McGuiness, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ralph and Rita Spencer as well as her son-in-law Richard Muth.

Joan was a graduate of South High School and the former Memorial Hospital School of Nursing both in Worcester. She also obtained her bachelor's degree from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA. Joan was a registered nurse for many years working for Memorial Hospital, doing private duty, and ending her distinguished career as the Director of the Public Health nurses for the city of Worcester. She was a hard-working and dedicated nurse. In one of the darkest days in Worcester's history, she aided and comforted victims of the devastating 1953 tornado.

With her husband, she raised and educated five children sending them all to college. Joan was a fierce advocate for all her children. She absolutely loved her family life and was a marvelous wife and mother. She also was a wonderful cook, trying countless recipes and amassing quite a collection of delicious dishes to share with her family; including her famous Sunday pot roast dinners. Joan always had a homemade dinner prepared each night and kept a beautiful home. Family events and the celebration of holidays were of paramount importance to her, and she always showed up for any event for her children and grandchildren. She loved her family members dearly and would do just about anything for their success and happiness.

Always the fashionista, Joan modeled her outfits with flair. Her eye for fashion was only surpassed by her dry wit and her saucy personality; "never a dull moment when Sully is near" was always the case (as noted in her high school yearbook). She was quite the local traveler. She loved taking day trips and exploring all of New England with her darling husband. Joan also loved county fairs, Pickity Place, antiquing, holiday house tours, and lunching with her girls.

In addition to being an avid reader, Joan was also a joiner. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Sweet Adelines and the Jaycees. She contributed to many charities. She enjoyed spending time at her beautiful summer cottage, "Shimmering Seas" in York, ME.

Words are incapable of expressing how much her family will miss her. She will be remembered and loved always.

We wish to thank the fine professional staff of Salmon Hospice for the amazing care they provided to our Mom over the last seven months which allowed her to make her final journey as comfortable as possible and from her own home. We thank the following Salmon Hospice staff; Dr. M. Kaddis, Stephanie, Sara, Cynthia, Sue Ellen, Katrina, Alison and Kelly. We, especially, would like to thank Ann, Brenda, Kathy, Kelly and Chaplain Brian for their dedication in caring for our mom on a regular basis. We wish to thank Kristin Gilchrist and Sabrina Couture of the Reliant Medical Group for their conscientious efforts to assist our mom over the past couple of years. We wish to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Mark Schrank of the Reliant Medical Group who as our mother's primary care physician was always there for her (and us) whenever the need arose. He provided wonderful care to our mother over an extended period of time with utmost skill and professionalism. Finally, we want to say thanks to Msgr. Sullivan of Christ the King Church for his spiritual guidance and assistance in seeing that our mom's wishes for her Mass and services were realized.

Her funeral Mass was private in Christ the King Church. There are no calling hours. Joan was interred at St. John's Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Robert. O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester assisted the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joan's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452 or to Salmon Hospice, 37 Birch Street, Milford, MA 01757.

I will miss the times our family had together with Grandma at the house in Maine, and the dry humor that so delighted me and my sister when we got to see our mom interact with her mom. I'm deeply grateful for those memories.

I'll always remember Grandma's dry sense of humor that was present at every family gathering. From 5 years old all the way to 36 she continually made me laugh and I'm pretty sure she's passed that attribute on to me at this point :) . I also have fond memories of watching The Wizard of Oz at the house in Worcester, stealing a finger full of her chocolate frosted cake before she had even served dinner, visiting with her and the family at the Maine house and just telling her all about my adventures and her always being so amazed and interested in everything I was doing. I love you Grandma!!!

Grandma,
Thank you for being there for every birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and other major holiday and life events. However what immortalized you as a cool Grandma forever to me was when I went to see the Jackie Chan movie, Rumble In The Bronx with you when I was a teenager. It was a rated R movie and I needed an adult to take me to it. Without hesitation when I asked you to bring me to the movie and you did! What I didn't expect was that you would also thoroughly enjoy Rumble In The Bronx. It was so cool that we could share the same taste in a movie despite our age difference. I also remember being shocked at how awesome your dance moves were at Emily's wedding! Despite being a "Grandma" you were lighting up the dance floor and inspiring everyone around you to dance. In that moment I felt nothing but sheer joy and I thank you for that. I remember so many times you cooking delicious food in Worcester for my family. Honestly, my favorite Italian food is your home cooked recipes of spaghetti and meatballs. Your sharp wit and biting sarcasm kept you anything but generic. I wish you were here right now to say something to lighten the mood and make me laugh because you excelled at that. I will hold on to my memories of you forever and live my life putting my family first as you did.
Love you Grandma.

Mom,

Thank you for all you´ve done for us and the sacrifices you´ve made. You taught us so many life lessons, the most important being love of family and helping others. I´ve told you this many times before that I am so grateful that you sent me to St. John´s and put me on a path to a much better life. I would not be half the person I am today without you (and of course Dad). Our family gatherings will never be the same without your trademark dry wit, humor and game playing. You were such a wonderful, loving Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Friend. We will take care of each other so please Rest in Peace and we´ll see you again. Love, Neil, Denise, Sean, Matt & Zach.

Dear family of Joan,
I never met Joan but while perusing the obituaries, I came across her name. I thought to myself....this name is familiar, I think she was a Public Health Nurse. I've been a Worcester Public Health Nurse for 22 years and although we never worked together I recognized her name. People continued to speak of her; she left her mark! She sounds like she was an amazing person. My deepest condolences

This obituary brings back memories and celebrates everything Mom would want to be remembered for. I especially appreciate the value she (and Dad) placed on education for all of their children-just as importantly for the girls as the boys in the family. They were both ahead of their time in that regard and that emphasis has contributed greatly to the quality of life all of us children have enjoyed.
Much love to everyone,
Chris

Chris, Bob, Joan, Nancy, and Neil. Please accept our deepest sympathies on the loss of your beloved Mother. Lucinda and I were fortunate to have had Joan as our next door neighbor. We will be bolstered by the many memories we have of her during those 26 years; she was truly a lovely person, always quick with a smile and a kind word. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Conroy family during this most difficult time. David and Lucinda.

Dearest Mother,

We are heart broken at losing you! We hope and pray you did not suffer at the end. We had so much fun the last 10 years together! Our favorite activities were; remembering Dad and other loved ones no longer of this world, dining out, going to Christmas shows, watching movies and Masterpiece Theater, visiting Maine, eating our meals together as a family at home, attending the weddings of Sari, Camie and Emily, celebrating family birthdays and the holidays and celebrating love together as a family of 3 in Worcester and so much more!

Dearest Mom, you were a voracious reader who ordered many books for us which we awaited with great anticipation! These books enriched our lives and we will be forever grateful!

It will never, ever be the same without you! You made each and every day so special! Please kiss Dad for us! Please greet all our beloved relatives who have left this world. Please look down on us with love! Thank you for all your many, many sacrifices and years of unconditional love!

God Bless You!

Truly an amazing person who made the world a better place.
Fond memories of playing as kids on Christ the King lawn, then later on getting "permission" to borrow Mr & Mrs Conroy´s car.

What a beautiful tribute Grandma! Sending our love and condolences up north. Of course we will also miss her saucy personality (ha!) and her presence at family gatherings as our matriarch. One memory I will cherish was celebrating the 2020 February birthdays together right before everything shut down; I feel lucky to have gotten to share in that celebration (she did a number on that bash cake, see photo!). Loved reflecting about the care she gave during her career as a nurse. We will have to have some lobster rolls and maybe some maple walnut ice cream in her honor soon! Sending hugs- Emily and Brad

Dear Mom, It is never easy to say goodbye, but I know I will see you again one day. Thank you for all the loving things you did for me. You always made sure I had a hot, home-cooked meal when I came home from school or work. You suffered so many illnesses in your life and your share of disappointments too, yet you always had a zest for life and adventure. I will truly miss our outings together (you, Nancy, and me). So many wonderful times spent together lunching at the Crown Bakery, the Worcester Art Museum, and Pickity Place, taking garden, house, and Christmas tours, and especially antiquing at The Cider Mill in Sterling and Wayside Antiques in West Boylston. So much fun! You were always up for adventure whether going to county fairs like the Asparagus fair or even driving around surrounding towns taking in the sights and chatting about family and the old times. Thanks for the wonderful trips! I never would have gone to these places without you. I will miss you always and forever. No holiday will ever be the same without you. You were such a strong, brave woman, so hardworking and dedicated. I hope Heaven is everything you ever wanted it to be! Give my love to Dad and Nana and Grandpa. Love always, Joanie XOXO
