John T. "Tim" Heffernan
1932 - 2012
BOW, NH / WORCESTER - John T. "Tim" Heffernan, 80, of Bow, NH, previously of Worcester, MA, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2012 in the presence of family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Caroline Murphy Heffernan, and his five children: John P. Heffernan and his wife Sandra MacKenzie of Jamestown RI, James A.W. Heffernan and his wife Luisa of Worcester MA, Ruth M. (Heffernan) Marsh and her husband Donald of Bellevue WA, Richard T. Burch Heffernan and his wife June of Madison WI, and Peter A. Heffernan and his wife Junko Nagano of Arlington MA; along with 8 grandchildren: Myles, Celia, Alexandra, Peter, Ian, Callum, Imogen, and Erika. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 38 years, Marie A. (Considine) Heffernan, his granddaughter Inez Marie, and brothers Roy and David Heffernan. He is survived by his siblings, Joan Jacobs of Needham, MA, Margaret Laughlin of Medfield, MA, Sheila Clark of Needham, MA, Michael Heffernan of Needham, MA, Thomas Heffernan of Montrose CO, and James Heffernan of Hanover, NH; and many nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was born on April 12,1932 in Boston, MA to Roy J. and Kathleen (Walsh) Heffernan. He lived Worcester from 1966 to 2004 before moving to Bow, NH.
Tim graduated from Boston College High School and, after one year at Holy Cross College, entered Maryknoll Seminary. He always spoke fondly of his five years in seminary and kept in close touch with classmates who served in the Maryknoll missions throughout the world. He later earned a Masters degree in Economics from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Economics from Clark University. He taught Economics and Statistics for 26 years at Assumption College, retiring as Professor Emeritus.
Tim was a gentle man and a devout Catholic. He was deeply influenced by Marriage Encounter, and for years he counseled engaged couples. More recently he volunteered as a mentor for Stephen Ministry. In 2011 he and his wife Caroline traveled to Turkey, Greece and Italy to tour many of the sites mentioned in the Bible.
He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and cherished brother and friend. Tim combined his athleticism with his love for the outdoors through biking, hiking and swimming. He expressed his artistic creativity through poetry, watercolor painting, and playing the piano.
Calling hours at Callahan and Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester will be from 5 to 8 PM on Wednesday May 9. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday May 10 at Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester.

I taught withTim for many years at Assumption and really appreciated his kindness and grounded presence. I also remember many of his incredibly talented children.
Had i known sooner about his death, I would have attempted to be present at either (both) his wake and funeral.
Please accept my sincerest condolences about your loss.

Frank Doyle said it well. I know my father cherished his relationships with George Doyle and Tim Heffernan. Tim was a generous and warm person - always a delight to see.

Thinking of all of you and praying for you and for Tim. I am sorry for the loss of your father/ husband/ grandfather. He will truly be missed. One of my favorite memories of Tim was when my mother was sick. Tim and Marie would drive up to hour house for 7 am (which was a good hour away) in order to make pancakes for my siblings and I. I still remember how much we loved snow white, Charlotte's Web, Airplanes and anything else we could come up with for him to shape out pancake as and all the laughter they brought into the house.
