Kathleen Murphy Obituary

Kathleen M. (Picard) Murphy

Holden - Kathleen M. (Picard) Murphy, of Holden Massachusetts died Monday at the Rose Monahan Hospice Center in Worcester. She was 64 years old.

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Marion (Kelliher) Picard. She was the eldest of six siblings.

She was the Dean of Admissions at Assumption College, where she worked for more than 40 years. As one of the longest-tenured employees of the school, she exemplified in her life and in her work the values and mission of the College. She was an active member of the Assumption community in many ways, serving on several committees and initiatives over the years.

She was a graduate of St. Joseph's College in Maine and earned a Master's Degree at Assumption College. She was a regular communicant at St. Mary's Church in Holden, where she volunteered in many capacities.

Kathy was a loyal friend and a dedicated worker. Her life was one of service to others and kindness to all, qualities that drew a wide circle of friends to her wherever she went. She laughed easily and drew out the best in others. She sought, and often found, joy in daily living.

She is survived by her husband, Patrick; their children Kerry of Marlboro and Tim of Holden, and two grandchildren Ashton and Nora. She is also survived by her siblings Susan Neafsey of Shrewsbury, Laura Loffredo of Rumford, RI, Joseph Picard of Hopewell Junction, NY and Robert Picard of Jefferson. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Picard.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 2 at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, and again on Saturday beginning at 8:45 a.m. with a procession at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 at St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Neafsey-Picard Scholarship Fund, c/o the Advancement Office at Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA. To Kathy's family,
I worked in Admissions with Kathy for many years first as a student, then staff. I'll always remember her stopping by my office singing lyrics from the song, "People are Crazy" and I think of her whenever I hear that song. Kathy was the heart and soul of Assumption Admissions and she will be so deeply missed. My thoughts are with you all during this time.

My deepest sympathies. I worked for Kathy at Assumption, as a tour guide and then counselor. Kathy was one of the most genuinely kind people I have ever met and I feel lucky to have known her. She always checked in on all of us everyday to make sure we were doing okay. She was quick to provide gratitude and words of encouragement.

It was always fun to watch her interact with prospective students. My favorite memory of Kathy happened due to miscommunication regarding a student; she congratulated the prospective student for receiving the Presidential Scholarship (he had yet to receive his award letter). The student and his parents were beyond thrilled and Kathy was so happy to have made their day.

Dear Murphy Family,

I had the pleasure to work for Kathy at Assumption College. She was the most genuine, warm, and caring person I have ever worked with. She became the work mom for many and she will be missed. One of my favorite Kathy moments always occurred during reading season. Every once in a while I would get a review sheet back that would have coffee rings or spills on it. Kathy would always circle it and write a note along the lines of "That was me, sorry." They always made me smile. I am truly sorry for your loss.
