Michael Greaney Obituary

Michael J. Greaney, 64

WEST YARMOUTH - Michael J. Greaney, 64, formerly of Worcester passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Massachusetts General Hospital on Friday February 2, 2018 after courageously battling a brief illness.

He was predeceased by his wife Amy D. (Hallback) Greaney in 2011. Michael is survived by his son Matthew Greaney and his wife Marissa of Worcester, and his daughter Vanessa Herrman and her husband Jonathan of Algonquin, IL. He was the proud "Grampy" of two granddaughters, Charlotte and McKayla Greaney, with his first grandson expected in April. He also leaves a brother, Stephen Greaney and his wife Joan of Worcester, a sister-in-law Kathleen Greaney, of Paxton as well as several nieces and nephews. His brother Paul M. "Pat" Greaney passed away in 2011.

Michael was born and raised in Worcester, youngest son of Paul J. and Bernice D. (Ambrose) Greaney. He was a graduate of Burncoat High School and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He later earned a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Westfield State University.

Michael was a corrections officer for 30 years with the Worcester County Sheriff's Office, retiring in 2007 with the rank of Assistant Deputy Superintendent. Following his retirement, he relocated to Cape Cod and enjoyed a position working security for Hy-Line Cruises where he could be found most summers on the Island of Nantucket.

He loved sports as both a participant and a spectator. He played multiple sports at Burncoat and college football at UMass. Mike enjoyed running and proudly achieved the accomplishment of completing six Boston Marathons. He was an avid fan of all New England sports, especially the New England Patriots for whom he was a season ticket holder since 2012.

Mike greatly enjoyed his retirement on Cape Cod. Not a day would go by that you could not find him walking his golden retriever Maxx on the beach. But he also looked forward to escaping New England winters, taking trips to the Gulf Coast of Florida. His most treasured times were when he was with his family and friends that he loved very much. Michael was adored by many and he will be greatly missed.

His family wishes to thank the Blake 7 MICU team at Massachusetts General Hospital for their skilled and compassionate care.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, February 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. Funeral services and burial at All Faiths Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Michael may be made in his name to Massachusetts General Hospital Blake 7 Unit, 125 Nashua St., Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114.

To the entire Greaney family:
My most sincere condolences to you at the loss of Mike. I knew him for so many years. I remember how he'd follow Pat and Steve to ball fields where we all were playing and to Holland Rink when we were all playing basketball. He himself became such an excellent athlete, as were his brothers. I'm so sorry to read of his passing. A fine family man and certainly one of God's gentlemen.

Another good person taken from us. Mike is gone but he will never be forgotten.

To the Family,
Sincere thoughts of prayers and strength during this difficult time of sorrow. Deputy Greaney, then the notably 'Captain' Greaney was my Operations Supervisor of the notorious Mods Complex. His signature sun glasses, famous one liners and master of corrections is his trademark. It's sad that after 30 years in that 'jungle' that his retirement wasn't fulfilled. May he now sail into the Cape Cod horizon filled with serenity, peace and the gentle breeze behind him.
God Bless,
Mike Martin.
