Nicholas Manzello Obituary

Nicholas P. Manzello, 82, of Worcester, a well known and respected sports columnist for the Worcester Telegram and Massachusetts State Boxing Coimmissioner passed away January 15th 2009 after a short battle with cancer.

"It's a sad day on Sports Street with the passing of T&G columnist Nick Manzello."

Nick was born in Worcester on January 29, 1927 the son of the late Antonio and Elizabeth (Petrone) Manzello and has lived here all his life.

He is survived by his devoted children, William C. Manzello and his wife Katherine (Cutting) of Worcester, Christopher P. Manzello and his companion Anne Revicki of Worcester, Kathryn M. Beauregard and her husband Ron of Holden, Mary E. Larson and her husband Steven of Auburn, Anne S. Kennedy and her husband John of Worcester, as well as 8 cherished grandchildren, Nychele, Kathryn and Jena-Lynn Beauregard, Lisa, Julie and Lauren Manzello, Emma and Morgan Kennedy, one great-grandchild, Nolan Fournier, a brother Edward Manzello and his wife Janice, a sister-in-law Doris Manzello, a long-time dear friend George Ayik, as well as many nieces, nephews, close friends and his cat Trixie.

In passing, Nick will be reunited with his beloved wife of 57 years Mary who passed away in 2005, his brothers Frank, Louis "Shine", Angelo, Rocco, and Anthony, his sisters Mary, Sarah, and Betty, his mother and father, and a granddaughter Amanda Lee.

Nick worked for the T&G for over 40 years as a reporter and columnist. His "Sports Street" column graced the pages of the T&G for many years, as a reporter he covered high school, college and professional sports, including, the NE patriots, Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, PGA tournaments, professional boxing, college football bowl games, and NCAA basketball playoffs. He took great pride in always focusing on the positive aspects of the game or event he was covering. Over the years Nick held court at a number of local establishments such as Holiday Donut, Scano's Bakery, Dunkin Donuts, Tony Marrone's Spa or the Bonardi Square Social Club where anyone could approach him to share information about local athletes. His presence will be sorely missed by the Central Massachusetts sports community. In 1978, he became the first T&G reporter to receive the United Press award for an outstanding feature story.

During his career Nick authored two books, Sports Twisters and Legacy of the Gladiator; he hosted a TV show on the local cable network, as well as a radio talk show on WORC, where he had the opportunity to interview many great sports legends such as Togo Palazi, Bob Cousy, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Jake LaMotta and Rocky Marciano, to name just a few.

In addition to his distinguished career as a sports writer, television and radio host, Nick was chair of the MA boxing commission, a member of the advisory board of directors of the Norwich Navigators, a New York Yankees farm team, and a former voting member of the international boxing hall of fame. Nick has received many honors including 70 media and civic awards. He may be the only sportswriter with a baseball field, a cigar, a 20 oz pork chop and a breakfast special named after him.

Among his honors Nick enjoyed several hall of fame inductions including Worcester Public Schools and the College of the Holy Cross, as well as an honorary degree from Worcester State College. He was always willing to help anyone in need and he spent much of his later life dedicating time to fundraising efforts for the Friendly House, coordinating and hosting the annual Galaxy of Stars event.

Nick took great pride in his Italian heritage supporting local civic organizations such as the Sons of Italy. He was also an avid baseball fan and probably New England's number one New York Yankee fan. Nick's love for his family and sports was coupled with his love for animals; he enjoyed the company of many pets over the years.

Friends, relatives and associates are invited to visit with the family Tuesday, January 19th from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. (please go directly to church). Entombment next to his beloved wife will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any of the following: The Friendly House, 36 Wall St, the Holy Name High School Scholarship Fund; Granite St. or Millbury Healthcare Center, Millbury Ave. Millbury.

I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to all the members of Nick Manzello's family. I knew Nick when he was always around the Grafton Hill scene during the mid 1940s. In the Summer he played kitty whist with us on Grafton St. Jr. High's Dorchester St. side lawn, while taking on all us Red Sox fans head on telling us how much better his Yankees were. When St. Stephen's High School fielded it's first baseball tean in 1946 under Ernie St. George, Nick was always there to give us words of encourgement by urging the team "onward and upward," and that we were going to have a great season, even after we were humillated something like 15-0, in an exhibition game against Grafton St. Jr. High, and the star of the game with five hits and five stolen bases, was Nick's brother, Tony. After the game, Tony asked Grafton Street's coach, Mr. William McCarthy: "If we can beat this high school team, then why can't we play against other city high school teams?" Mr. McCathy answered him: "I'll think about it, Tony?" When Boston lost the 1948 Pennant to Cleveland in a playoff game, Nick never let up, reminding us about it all Winter long; and when Boston lost the 1949 Pennant to the Yankees by one game when the Yankees swept the heavily favored Bosox in the final three game series of the season in New York, Nick was the proverbial "Cock of the Walk," right up to the beginning of the 1950 spring training season. The 1949-1950 Grafton Hill Winter Hot Stove League was in a deep freeze, but wherever Nick was standing, it was sizzling. Nick Manzello was a great gent from a great family; and he earned the right to be called: "The William Shakespeare of Worcester sports writers." And I'm sure that Mr. Shakespeare was writing about Nick when he said: "His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand and say to all the world, 'THIS WAS A MAN!'" Thanks once more Nick. Bill Farrell

Dear Manzello Family:

On behalf of the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission allow me to extend ours as well as my personal condolences on Nick's passing. Even while he was sick at home his presence was still felt through all of our weekly meetings and daily activities. Before I became Commissioner, it was Nick that called me to judge my first world championship fight. When I became Commissioner, it was Nick who first called me to congratulate me. I will never forget either call.
I am very sorry for not having been able to appear in person for any of the services as I am away out of state. Nick will be missed, and I extend my sympathies on your loss.

I have observed few people who brought more joy to a community than Nick Manzello. From his first Sports Street column in 1968, to his last on Christmas Day, 2009, Nick used his platform in the best and most generous way possible. On a personal level, and like countless others, I will be forever grateful to Nick for his support and kindness. Nick Manzello was one of the nicest men I have ever been privileged to know.

My sincere condolences to the Manzello family.

Dear Ann,
It's been years since I have seen you or your dad. I was your favorite Friendly Ice Cream waitress on Grafton St. You would always bring me something for Christmas. I even remember when you got accepted at Notredame. You and your dad were always so upbeat and he loved you so much. I never saw either of you unkind to one another. In fact you dad was kind to everyone. I am sorry that he has passed and for your loss the world has lost someone special.

Nick know belongs to the ages. Our condoleneces to immediate family as well as all of Nick's friends.

The T&G should rename the Sport's section - Manzellos Sports Street Pages. Many time as a kid growing up on grafton hill and even today one would head right for Sports Street to see what Nick had to say about people we knew, knew off or were close friends. He would write about the kids we grew up or competed against and he would follow people throughout their careers and let us know when someone else now belongs to the ages.

While I must be honest and never did read all the names in the annual christmas publication, I did scan it
;-)

I will always think back to some articles about Cozzolino and our softball games. Only Nick could write it in such a way that it sounded like it was Olympic Competition.

Nick will be sorely missed in many ways but we all have our various memories to bring us comfort in these trying times as we bid Nick safe journey.

Nick Manzello was a great person and friend. He also was the best sports reporter I have ever met. In my 37 year friendship with Nick I have many memories to recall and treasure. His Sports Street Column ws the best local coverage of Sports people in the Worcester paper and prehaps the entire country. Nick never forgot anyone Each year at Christmas morning I would search the Sports Street Column for my name as I am sure all of us did I always found mine and I believe you found yours. Nick will be deaply missed by all of us. I hope someone continues the Sports Street Column so his legacy will live forever
Nick thank you for the memories, and for each time I called with a story mentioning it in your column especially my grandson, my players and stories the T&G did not cover until you did I'll see you later my friend

My condolences to his family and friends. Fond memories of Nick will stay with me forever. As a former co-worker, we made quite a few trips together as a news gathering team, and I will attest that Nick was a kind, personable, and very knowledgable man who always succeeded at whatever mission he set out on and whatever goal he aspired to.
