Peter LeClair Obituary
1952 – 2014
Quinebaug, CT - Peter R. LeClair, 61, of Old Turnpike Rd., died Sunday, May 18, 2014 in his home. Born in Southbridge, MA, he was the son of Elizabeth (Willett) LeClair and the late George S. LeClair. Mr. LeClair was a 1970 graduate of Marianhill Central Catholic High School in Southbridge, MA. He earned his bachelor's degree in Special Education from Annhurst College in South Woodstock, CT. Peter went on to earn his master's degree in Special Education from the University of Connecticut. He taught and worked in administration for the Dempsey Regional Center for thirty years retiring in 2003. Peter was a member of the CT CSCA. He enjoyed gardening with vegetables, flowers, and various herbs and spices. He had a passion for reading which helped him to know something about everything. He loved his four cats, being out in the nature, and live music. In addition to his mother, Peter is survived by his brother, Richard G. LeClair of Phoenix, AZ; and his sister, Alicia J. LeClair of Quinebaug. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Peter's family from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, May 26, 2014 in the Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale. A gathering will begin in the funeral home at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2014 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Stephen Church, 130 Old Turnpike Rd, Quinebaug, CT. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial donations, may be made to P.A.W.S, P.O. Box 248, Eastford, CT 06242. For memorial guestbook visit:

Sorry to hear Peter is gone. After freshman initiation, as the cleaning up commenced, Peter came up to me in a sea of craziness and said, good job David you made it. I had no idea who he was at the time, but he was certainly a friendly face and a kind soul when I needed one - a friend I trusted. Fair Winds and Following Seas.

Very few people are as giving, caring, and sincere as Peter. I had the honor to work with Peter at JDC for many years. He always had a smile. He truly was a compassionate and gentle person. I always felt honored to call him "friend". He is truly missed. RIP my friend.

I remember as little kids playing, the school bus stop at your house and your Father calling you home for supper. Peter and I knew each other in a casual way, having been brought together many times during his time working at the Dempsey Center. I always enjoyed my verbal 'jousts' with him that always left me laughing. I have one memory of an exchange that I still makes me laugh 30 years later and it is one that I will always hold as my best memory of him. If a man is judged by the friends he leaves behind, then Peter's life was well lived. My condolences to his family and many friends. Rest in peace, "La Boheme".

I have known this man for almost 4 years. In that short time, he became a brother to me. He became such a huge part of my life. I met him in Second Life. I would keep 70s 80s and 90s music playing. When a song would start. I would simply ask him "How many?". He would laugh and give me an answer. He loved music. He had attended numerous concerts in his lifetime. I would be asking him how many times he had seen that artist/group in concert. He was such an encourager. I knew how much pain he was really in. He did not want anyone to worry. I would ask him every single day how he was doing. He would always say "about the same." I have such love for this man. No words can express how much he means to me. He would constantly encourage me and feed my desire to "create" things. I always wanted to someday visit his home. The pictures we so lovely. He so loved working in his yard. He so loved his mother. He so loved ... Loved .. He was so very loving to everyone. I love you so much my brother. I will do my best to keep your love alive.

Peter and I graduated Annhurst College in the same class. I can see his face in the Student Union talking and laughing with friends as I close my eyes thinking back to those days that I passed through to retrieve my mail. Kind and friendly are two adjectives to describe Peter. During class discussions he always added thought provoking comments. Peter's chosen quote in our yearbook holds true to this day, "Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged. Missing me one place search another. I stop somewhere waiting for you." I will forever appreciate and treasure my friendship with Peter. He was not only a kind, intelligent and generous soul but also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed life. I have fond memories of disco dancing with Peter after a conference and watching his performances in Dempsey plays! Even after I moved to Florida, Peter never forgot to send a birthday or Christmas card. He will truly be missed.

What a great pleasure it was to have known and worked with Peter at the John N. Dempsey Center for 10 years. I don't ever recall a day where he wasn't positive and upbeat and motivated to working miracles for every special individual he met. He was a team player and always up for a good time after hours. And those hours could be lengthy. He was a blue-chip professional; genuine, sensitive and loving. I, and many others, will miss him but his memory will always bring a warm smile to my face. Rest in peace, Peter...for a life well lived.
