Sean Glew Obituary

Sean Alexander Glew, 39, beloved son, husband, father, educator, and friend, passed away on July 12, 2009, after a brave struggle with thymic carcinoma.

Sean died at his summer home in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nicole; his children, Molly and Mason; his parents, Dorothea and Richard; his brothers, Richard, Christopher, and Kevin, and their families; and his grandmother, Madelyn Glew.

A career educator, Sean was Chair of the History Department at the Holderness School in Plymouth, NH. At the time of his death, he was also a graduate student at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. Emblematic of Sean's perseverance, he continued teaching throughout his ordeal.

Sean was an intelligent, engaging, artistic, kind individual, and a loving husband and father. A graduate of St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, and Colby College in Waterville, Maine, Sean was an accomplished athlete, competing successfully in baseball, hockey, and distance running.

Sean embraced life with commitment and vigor. He loved spending time with his family; playing and coaching sports; educating students on history and public policy; mentoring students; reading nonfiction; traveling and exploring New England and the Pacific Northwest. With his unique sense of humor, Sean charmed and entertained everyone. At the time he became ill, he was training with his wife for a marathon.

The family particularly would like to thank Phillip Peck, Head of School, and the entire Holderness community for their unwavering support during Sean's illness.

A memorial Mass to celebrate his life will take place on Sunday, August 2nd at 1 PM at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holderness School, 33 Chapel Lane, Holderness, NH 03264.

As a classmate and X-country teammate of Sean's at St. John's, I was saddened to hear of his passing. We spent many hours conversing as we ran the streets of Shrewsbury and though I hadn't been in contact with him for many years, I regret that one of our own was taken far too soon. My best wishes to the Glew family.

To Chris and all the Glew family: The St. John's High School community is saddened to learn of the passing of your brother, son, husband and father. I remember Sean as one of our most successful runners and students, an energetic guy who just wouldn't quit. And of course he continued to bless with his vigor and goodness everyone else he encountered in his later adult life. May we all be inspired to live life with Sean's quality approach.

To the Glew Family,

I want to extend my condolences to your wonderful family concerning Sean. I was privileged to have Sean as a history student at Saint Johns. As I related to our Principal, Sean was the consumate history student - bright, enthusiastic, curious and anxious to learn. More importantly, I remember that as a teacher, I was always so happy to see him each and every day, in that he always brought his enthusiastic friendship and personality to class with him. As teachers, we hold fond memories of those students who brought joy and friendship to our classrooms. Sean was one of those young men who brought joy to my life as an educator. I thank you and Sean for his wonderful life.

Sincerely,

Carl Wilson

Dear Dr. Glew & Family,
There are no words that can express how saddened Joe and I were to hear of the passing of your son, Sean.
We think of you often and will never forget all that you have done for Joe.
Although we never had the pleasure of meeting Sean and his brothers, we remember seeing their photos in your office. We will always remember the discussions regarding the progress of the "hockey pucks" as Joe referred to them vs. the Sutton Sammies.
Please accept our sincerest sympathies and may your fond memories of Sean comfort you with the passing of time.
Sincerely,
Joseph & Suzanne Laperle

An absolutely beautiful young man who I consider myself very fortunate to have known. I can't remember moments of Sean without a smile on his face and even when pushed, never a bad word for anyone.

I have no idea how you raise children to be like Sean but if you end up bottling the serum, please let me know where you plan on distributing it.

The world is today, and will be for quite some time, a lot less fun and a much sadder place. However, knowing that two young children carry so much of Sean with them into the future, although it does not take the loss away, puts a smile on my face hoping they will grow and pass along to their friends what Sean passed along to us.

Thanks so much for sharing Sean with us.

Dear Sean,
Nearly a week has gone by, and I am still painfully saddened by your passing.
You were the consummate teacher: beginning your illustrious career back when you were my six year old big brother. You selflessly gave of yourself and cared in order to make us a loving and cohesive family. Since I was a small boy, you were always there to teach me, play with me, and to love me. I thank you for setting a loving, caring, and courteous example to which we should all aspire. You will always be the best of us. We will all take care of your family, and continue to love them as we will forever love you, brother.
Love,
Kevin
