William McCarthy Obituary

William J. McCarthy, Jr., Esq., 77, of Marlborough, died April 23, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Elizabeth (O'Connor) McCarthy; three daughters: Jane K. McCarthy and Margaret M. McCarthy, both of Marlborough, and MaryEllen McCarthy of Holden; and a son, Paul J. McCarthy and his wife, Shari of Oxford. He also leaves four grandchildren: Kayla McCarthy, Michael McCarthy, Tyler McCarthy and Shane McCarthy all of Oxford; a brother, Edward G. McCarthy of Clinton; and a sister, Elizabeth E. Yindrick of David City, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews. Father of the late Michael E. McCarthy.

He was born in Marlborough, son of the late William J., Sr. and Jeannette B. (Harpin) McCarthy and was a lifelong resident of Marlborough. A 1950 graduate of St. John's High School in Worcester and he received a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in 1954. He was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps. After his service in the Marines, he received a J.D. from the New England School of Law and had a long career as a trial attorney practicing law for Kemper Insurance and Locke & Associates of Boston.

He was a member of the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys and the Massachusetts Bar Association. A lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, he served as an altar boy, lector, President of the Holy Name Society and Principal of the CCD. He belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians and he enjoyed his role as Master of Ceremonies for the annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner for many years.

From 1969 to 1979, he was Chairman of the Marlborough Redevelopment Authority and was instrumental in the City's Urban Renewal Project. He also served on the Board of the Assabet Valley Home Health Association and was a Trustee for the Marlborough Savings Bank.

Funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 10 a.m. from the John P. Rowe Funeral Home, Inc., 57 Main St., Marlborough with a Mass at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Marlborough. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Immaculate Conception Parish Development Fund, 25 Washington Ct., Marlborough, MA 01752.
