Barbara Jones Obituary

Barbara Jones

Barbara Jones passed away peacefully on October 21, 2020. She was well loved by family and many friends. She will be greatly missed but her legacy will remain.

Barbara Auld Jones was born on December 24, 1923 in Alliance, Ohio to the late Thomas F. and Margaret M. Auld. Barbara grew up in Alliance and stayed in Ohio to complete her educational career, graduating from Alliance High School in 1942, Denison University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1945 and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing with a Masters of Nursing in 1947.

In 1946, she married William Jewett and they proceeded to have four children. During her child rearing days, she was an involved and supportive mother. She excelled in many areas and activities. She even found time to become an accomplished golfer highlighted by finishing runner-up in the Cleveland Women's District Golf Tournament in 1962.

In 1968, Kent State University initiated a Baccalaureate Nursing Program where Barbara was one of the first teachers hired and spent ten years teaching. She met Dr. James C. Jones, a general surgeon at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, OH, who had served in the 8063rd Mash unit in Korea. She married the love of her life in 1978. They retired to Amelia Island in 1985 where they spent 30 wonderful years together. They lived life to the fullest, traveling the United States and the world, playing tennis and golf, socializing with a great number of friends and volunteering their time to many different beneficial causes.

After Jim's death in December of 2009, Barbara continued playing golf, reactivated her bridge game, attended exercise classes regularly and continued her volunteer activities. She spent many years volunteering in the Fernandina Beach, FL area for the Baptist Medical Center, the Barnabas Center, the American Cancer Society and the Amelia Island Museum of History. She was very active with the Amelia Island Chapel and was inspired by her faith.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Margaret (Todd) Bender of Nashville, TN, her sons Geoffrey (Ann) Jewett of Novato, CA, Mark (Connie) Jewett of Atascadero, CA, and Thomas (Marcie) Jewett of Sagamore Hills, OH, and her stepson Jeffrey Jones of Whitefish, MT. She is survived by 12 grandchildren - Kristin Locke, Katie (Rhett) Fordham, Lyz Bender, Scott Bender, Munro (Brad) Hixon, Michael (Darcie) Jewett, Kevin (Elicia) Jewett, Katie Jewett, Chris (Amanda) Jewett, Courtney (Andy) Jewett, Max Jewett and Nicole (Bob) Carey and 12 great grandchildren (Ben & McKenzie, Larkin, Maggie, & Kade, Flora & Oliver, Henry & Caroline, Griffin & Owen and Henry)
