David Alan Shepard

Dickson,TN - A private family service is planned with burial in the Dickson Union Cemetery. Ed White will officiate. A Celebration of Life event will be scheduled and announced later when it is safe for friends to gather together.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you give back to the Dickson Community that he loved so much: The Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, the Dickson First United Methodist Church, and Dickson County Habitat for Humanity.

David passed away on February 4, 2021 following a valiant battle with cancer.

David Alan Shepard was born in Hickman County October 6, 1947 and grew up in Dickson County. After graduating from Dickson High School in 1965 he attended and played baseball for the University of Tennessee at Martin. After graduating from college and ROTC in 1969 he served in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star with Valor.

David met his wife Martha in UT Pharmacy School in Memphis in 1971. They married in May 1974.

David and Martha bought Hamdorff Pharmacy in Dickson in 1981, renaming it Dickson Apothecary. David also worked for the VA Hospital in Nashville for 22 years counseling veterans and was the first certified clinical pharmacist in the VA system.

David won many awards during his lifetime, including the Tennessee Pharmacy Association Bowl of Hygeia for Community Service - 1998, theTennessee Pharmacy Association Outstanding Pharmacist of the Year - 2000, the Tennessee Pharmacy Association Lifetime Achievement Award - 2012, the Tennessee Pharmacy Association Barbara McAndrew Herald Award - 2016, the CASA Champions for Children Award - 2017, and the Dickson County Good Scout Award - 2019

David served Dickson as Vice Mayor and on the Dickson City Council for over 20 years.

David was a State Representative for 16 years and was a strong advocate for education, health, mental health and veterans care. He served on local boards for many years including Bank of Dickson, Dickson Community Clinic, Clement Railroad Hotel Museum, and the Jackson Foundation.

Later in life he continued to serve, being elected to the Dickson County Commission in 2018 and was appointed to the UT Board of Trustees by former Gov Bill Haslam in 2017.

David was an avid golfer and lawn mower and loved to travel the world. Upon retirement from pharmacy he began sharing his expertise on medical mission trips to Belize, Guatemala, and Haiti with wife Martha.

David is survived by wife Martha Frazier Shepard, children Chris (Mandy), Stacey Levine (Ethan), and Ben (Kitzie); six grandchildren Clara Levine, Jack Shepard, McCall Shepard, Lucy Levine, Ford Shepard, and Roan Levine; and five siblings Randy, Dennis, Ricky, Donna, and Susan. David was preceded in death by his parents Patricia and MO Shepard.

Condolences to the family. I had the honor of serving in Vietnam with Lt. Shepard. Forty years later we met again at the Vietnam Veterans Line Haul Reunion. 566TC US Army 1970-71. Rest In Peace.
