Elsa Richter Obituary

Elsa Lee Neely Richter

Nashville, TN

Elsa Lee Neely Richter died at home on April 30th at age 100.

Born March 9, 1915 in Natchez, MS to David Edward Neely and Louisa Clough Lipscomb Neely. Preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Winston Boos Richter, and her six sisters, Annie Mary Creel, Dorothy Louise Cullum, Marcia Frances Thweatt, Marjorie Lipscomb Glass, Lady Claire Harless, and Perry Edward Gregory.

Survived by her children, Louisa (Frank) Farley and Winston Boos (Suzanne) Richter, Jr.; two grandchildren, Lee Ann (Mark) Burney and Lisa Travis, and four great-grandchildren, Alex Burney, Winston Burney, Jesse Travis, and Hunter Travis.

Elsa has resided in Nashville since 1987 where she was a member of Hillsboro Church of Christ. Previously, she and her husband lived in McMinnville, TN where they owned a photographic and art studio. Elsa painted professionally and taught art for more than 60 years. During her career, Elsa participated in numerous judged exhibits, one-man shows, and art shows in Nashville, McMinnville, and Cookeville in TN, as well as Bradenton and Long Boat Key in Florida. She was a well-known participant in shows at the Parthenon, Cheekwood, Harding Academy, David Lipscomb Academy, and Christ the King Academy. Prior to moving to McMinnville, Elsa assisted her husband Boos in his position as superintendent of the Tennessee Orphan Home in Spring Hill, TN where they lived for more than 20 years. During this time she was known as "Mama Boos" and spent countless hours making sure that every child had Christmas and birthday presents, and clothes they could be proud to wear. She and her husband took the high school children on yearly trips, including Washington, DC, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Virginia. Each summer, the entire home went on a week-long camping trip to a state park in Tennessee. Elsa was a Christian and member of the Church of Christ for more than 85 years.

At a very early age, she became a daily Bible reader. For about 85 years, she never missed a day in reading her Bible. The family deeply appreciates the assistance provided by Bonnie Gluth, Susan Whitley, Alive Hospice, and Whole Care connections. Their gentle care made it possible for her family to keep her at home.

Visitation with the family will be Sunday, May 3, from five o'clock until eight o'clock, at Woodlawn Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be on Tuesday, May 5, at Hillsboro Church of Christ at ten o'clock, with visitation at nine o'clock. Pallbearers will be Troy Greenlee, Jesse Travis, Hunter Travis, Mark Burney, Alex Burney, and Winston Burney.

Elsa and Boos Richter took photographs of my children when they were little as they did for hundreds more in McMinnville. Those pictures still hang in my home. In later years I was able to purchase 2 or 3 paintings she had done because I so admired her work. I am at my sister's today visiting and our discussion led to one of those paintings hanging on my sister's wall that I gave her 30 years ago. I hadn't realized Elsa had passed away, but I just want to say McMinnville was blessed to have such a fine couple living the Christian life here in our small town for so many years.
Their children and grandchildren should be proud of the examples they set in their daily lives.

The Richters were two of my favorite people. All who knew them were blessed. They both adhered to the " law of kindness" in dealing with others. The couple were active members of the church at Westwood while in McMinnville, and Brother Richter served as an Elder. (While here he began my favorite annual event at the church, the "wild game dinner," a tradition that ended when they moved to Nashville but was recently begun again.) Mrs. Elsa was an accomplished artist, and I am privileged to own one of her wonderful floral paintings. May God bless the Richters in Heaven and their family and loved ones who remain in this life.

Momma Boos
Thank you for beimg there to comfort me in 1959 when I was a young girl at 11 yrs old. TOH became a home to my siblings and I .Best thing that happened as it instilled in me a christian foundation.

Mama Boos and Daddy Boos have always been such an integral part of Tennessee Orphan's Home and my childhood memories...broke my heart when they retired and moved to McMinnville, TN. Over the years, I've bought several pieces of her beautiful artwork at the biennial reunion at Chickasaw and in more recent years, one of the last ones she painted. My favorite is one Mama Boos painted for me from a photo I took of Cumberland Falls...I am mesmerized when I look into the falls, and I can actually see the water flowing...what an incredibly talented artist. I will always treasure her creations. I so loved watching her enjoy the skits performed at the Chickasaw reunions and hear her delicate, melodious laughter, and sometimes, she would take us all by surprise with her comments...hilarity ensued. But oh, she was so much more to me in my young life; she was "Mama Boos" to countless young people, a beautiful example of a Christian wife and mother, and I count myself ever so blessed that she was part of mine and now, forever in my heart.

Mama Boos, you'll never know how you truly touched my life. As a small child, who was thrown into an environment , so unfamiliar, you helped ease my fears and showed me love that I had never known. You have touched and enriched so many children's lives , that will continue through our own lives. You are a virtuous woman. Praying for all your family!!!! Love, Charlene Martin Sellers
