Hubert Bradley Lewis

Hubert Bradley Lewis (Colonel Hugh X. Lewis) was born in Yeadis, Ky, Dec. 25, 1930. He passed away on Dec. 29, 2020 at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Anna Mae Lewis, daughter Saundra Taylor (Harry), grandson Zachary Taylor, granddaughter Brooke Tometich (Jake), and two great grandchildren, Lyndon and Louie. He is preceded in death by his mother, Deliah Rice, and his two sons Lance and Monty.

In his early years, he worked the coal mines of Lynch, KY, until moving to Nashville in 1964 with his wife and young children to fulfill his dream as a country singer/songwriter. In 1964 he wrote Stonewall Jackson's hit "BJ the DJ" and was awarded Songwriter of the Year. He was a BMI award winning writer and performer with over 250 Country and Christian songs recorded by artists such as Charlie Pride, Little Jimmy Dickens, Del Reeves, Jim Ed Brown, Carl Smith, Kitty Wells, and many others.

He authored over 250 poems and was awarded Poet Laureate of Christian Country Music by the TN State House and Senate in 2006. He performed on country radio and television including the Grand Ole Opry, Renfro Valley Barn Dance and the TN Barn Dance. His television show "The Hugh X. Lewis Country Club" sponsored by Heil Quaker Corp. was the longest running single sponsored multi market show in country music history.

His list of accomplishments also included appointment as the Country Music Ambassador of TN by Mayor Beverly Briley in 1971, he appears on the "Walkway of the Stars" at Nashville's Hall of Fame, he has received the Governors Award by the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, has had daily features on the Gospel Radio Network, and appeared regularly on the Jimmy Roger Snows Gospel Show. He was featured and starred in four feature films. He was also inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame. Starting in 2006, he made regular poet contributions to the Baptist and Reflector. He became sought after as a speaker/entertainer for senior adult groups across the state. In 2007 he was awarded the commission of Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of KY in recognition of an individual's noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to their community, state, and nation.

Hugh X Lewis can still be heard on radio station WSGS F.M. in Hazard, KY, where he hosts "The Christian Country Story Show," Sundays 7-8 am CST and 5-6 pm CST.

A memorial celebration of his life will take place at a later time.
