John McConnell Obituary

McCONNELL, JR., John W. A resident of Park Manor Senior Apartments, died January 29, 2008 of congestive heart failure. He was 86 years old. Mr. McConnell, a native of Bessemer, AL, graduated from the University of Alabama in 1942. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he graduated from Yale Law School in 1948. He was a partner in the law firm of Ambrecht, Jackson, McConnell and Demouy in Mobile, AL. In 1965, Mr. McConnell and his family volunteered for a three-year tour in the Peace Corps in Nigeria. Prior to his retirement in 1991, Mr. McConnell was Vice-President and General Counsel for Sea Land Shipping and was Of Counsel with Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens in Washington, DC. Mr. McConnell married his wife, Margaret Snider McConnell in 1944. She passed away in 2006. Mr. McConnell is survived by four children, Margaret Evans of New York City, Rebecca Braden of Nashville, TN, Catherine McConnell of Florence, AL, John W. McConnell III of Washington, DC; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2008 at St. Henry Catholic Church Chapel. Braden Family: I'm so glad I got to meet Big Daddy at Tracy's and Dixon's new home a few summers back. He was a joy to visit with and I was in awe of the wonderful life he and Big Mama must have lived. I'm sure you have lots of wonderful memories to cherish.
