Kenneth Schneider Obituary

Kenneth George Schneider, Jr.

Kenneth George Schneider, Jr., long time resident of Nashville and presently from Johns Island, South Carolina, passed away January 25, 2020. Ken was a renowned architect in Nashville and also the founder and co-owner of Sergeant Peppers, an iconic 70's record and cutting-edge clothing store in Hillsboro Village. He moved to Johns Island, SC, shortly after Hurricane Hugo to help with architectural restoration efforts there.

Ken was born April 25, 1932, in Anniston, Alabama, son of Kenneth George Schneider, Sr. and Eleanor Ross Stillwell Schneider. He graduated from McCallie School in Chattanooga and attended Princeton University where he thrived in gaining a broad education with a major in architecture. Immediately after graduation he served with the US Corps of Engineers and following, spent the rest of his working life as a practicing architect specializing in forensic and restoration architecture.

In his spare time, Ken enjoyed sailing, woodworking, playing bluegrass music, and engaging in passionate and stimulating conversations, often grabbing a napkin or scrap piece of paper to illustrate his points with precise diagrams. In his later years he was a member of St. John's Parish Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry as senior warden, as chairman of the building committee and lay Eucharistic minister.

Ken leaves his wife, Rita, his son Robert "Rob" Schneider (Lee Ann), stepson, John Haggard, stepdaughters, Jane Haggard, Whitney Haggard Hagen, his brother John "Jack" Schneider (Nell), grandsons Chris Schneider (Emma), Marshall Schneider (Katie), granddaughter, Paige Schneider, three great granddaughters, niece Carolyn Schneider (Barrett Sutton), nephews Jac Schneider, Drew Schneider (Janet) and Ross Schneider.

Ken is preceded in death by his parents and his son, George Schneider.

I was saddened to learn, belatedly of Ken's passing. We worked together on several projects as did members of my firm, for over 25 years beginning in the late 1970s through approximately 2008. Although I had not communicated with Ken for some years, my memories of his good nature, wit, resourcefulness and intelligence are still clear. During a series of projects in the north Houston area in the 1980s, Ken, John Krog and I would often finish a long day with a meal at Pappas seafood restaurant near the airport. We loved the food and always had excellent camaraderie and lively conversation. This experience was repeated on other projects including in New Braunsfeld and Fort Stockton, Texas. I was proud to call Ken a friend and I will miss him. Martin W. Dies, Orange and Austin, Texas.

I was saddened to hear of Ken's death. He and I worked together closely for many years in connection with construction litigation. He was my architectural consultant, but more importantly my friend. It was a privilege to know him, such a distinguished yet kind and humble gentleman. I will always treasure the memory of our work sessions together at his office on John's Island, usually followed by lunch at Rosebank Farms Cafe, which Ken knew as "Julie's", on Bohicket Creek. He loved God, his family, his friends and his community, and, when he could manage the time, his boats. Godspeed Ken. To the family, I offer my prayers and sincere condolences.
