Sally Ann Jaggard Killian, M.D., age 59, died Monday, April 13, 2015 at her home in Nashville, TN.
She was born August 19, 1955 in Camden, NJ, to the late Dr. Clarence (Bud) and Sally Cecilia Jaggard. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Zoology in 1977. She earned a medical degree from University of Alabama, Birmingham, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1982. Dr. Killian completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at UAB in 1985.
Dr. Killian entered private practice at UAB in 1985. After she married in 1988, she moved with her husband Thomas to Nashville. She was a member of the General Internal Medicine division at Vanderbilt University until 1991. While Thomas completed his service with the U.S. Navy and his fellowship training, the family moved several times. In 1991 in Bremerton, Sally worked as a senior physician with the Seattle-King County Department of Health, and as Medical Director of Jail Health Services at the King County Jail in downtown Seattle. Dr. Killian supervised a staff of 60 nurses and 10 nurse practitioners. She concurrently held a clinical teaching appointment and taught in the outpatient clinics at Harborview, the large indigent hospital in Seattle. In 1994, while in Indianapolis, she became a clinical faculty member at Indiana University Medical Center and spent the year working on the chemical dependency unit at the VA and teaching the substance abuse portion of the psychiatry rotation for third year students. The following year in San Diego, she was Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego.
In 1997, the family returned to Nashville, where Dr. Killian entered private practice at Nashville Medical Group, followed by Heritage Medical Associates at Baptist Hospital. Dr. Killian served as a member of the Board of Baptist Hospital and was a member of the Saint Thomas Health Systems Board from its inception. She served on the Finance Committee and was the Chair of the Mission and Ethics Committee. She was Medical Director of the Baptist Comprehensive Breast Care Center and taught for the University of Tennessee Internal Medicine Program at Baptist Hospital. She also taught fourth year students from Vanderbilt Medical School and nurse practitioners in Vanderbilt's Bridge Program.
Dr. Killian received numerous awards for the outstanding quality of care she provided her patients, and for her service on the Boards of Baptist Hospital and Saint Thomas Health Systems. In 2006 she was named to The Seton Society of Saint Thomas Health Services for her excellence in service. In 2013 she received the Award of Honor for Excellence in Medicine from the National Institute of Medicine. In 2014 she was honored with the Outstanding Physician Award from the Tennessee Medical Association, given annually to member physicians who through their illustrious medical careers make an impression among their colleagues, peers and on the profession of medicine in Tennessee.
Above and beyond her accolades and accomplishments, Sally will be remembered for her tremendous capacity for empathy, compassion and goodness. She faced terminal illness with the same faith that guided her care for others; in her words, "Love is greater than any disease and the suffering it brings."
She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Dr. Thomas J. Killian of Nashville; their children, Ann, Mary, Patrick and Bridget; her sisters, Susan Ottemiller of North Bend, OR, Sandy Jaggard of Miami, FL, and Cindy Everett of Calgary, AB; brothers, Clarence (B.J.) Jaggard of Suffolk, VA and John Jaggard of Birmingham, AL; and nanny, Tresea Davis of Nashville.
A Vigil Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. after the vigil service.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 17, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3001 Belmont Blvd., Nashville, TN 37212.

Dr Sally was the best doctor I ever had. I hesitated a long time to find a replacement PCP when she left her practice, and when I finally settled on someone last year, I told her that I hoped to have the same good relationship that I'd had with Dr. Sally. I know her family has missed her greatly because I'm sure she was even a much better wife and mother than doctor - and that's saying a lot. Because of Jesus, we have the hope of seeing each other again. May God continue to comfort her family.

She was just a sweet girl in the neighborhood in our hometown of Woodbury, NJ, a year younger than me. Never paid much attention to her (she was not one to ask for attention), and I lost track of her after high school. What a fine person she turned out to be and such a distinguished career! I just learned this week that Dr. Sally (as I called her) had passed away and I was so very sad. I saw Dr. Sally for my annual physical from 2001 until she stopped practicing. She was the most compassionate doctor I ever saw, and she took more time with me, as her patient, than any other physician I've ever known. She was gentle and kind in spirit, always smiling, speaking of her family, and asking about mine; always interested in the whole person. I fear there will never be another doctor like Dr. Sally and I still have not established myself with another. May God richly bless the husband and children that she left behind.

I simply loved Dr. Killian for her skill and for her compassion toward me as her patient. I considered her my friend and looked forward to my appointments with her. She enjoyed Trumpet Magazine, which was my major project at church [smile]. She always asked about Bishop Walker.

I worked with Sally in the 1990's at Vanderbilt. Later, when she returned to Nashville, I was her patient along with my husband and my mother. I will always remember her forming a prayer circle around my mother's death bed. As everyone has said, she was an amazing doctor and an even more amazing woman. Dr. Killian was my PCP ... I went in one day, very sick with a sinus infection. She took one look at me, said "You look like someone who needs a hug." And that's what she did. I have never forgotten what a sweet gesture that was. I grieved when she had to cease practicing and I am grieving again now at her loss. What a dear person.

St. Thomas More Chapel & Center at Yale University mourns the passing of an outstanding mother of two terrific Yalies and remains grateful for the many times Sally graced us with her presence, warmth and love. We are a better community because she was here. May she rest in God's eternal embrace and to her wonderful family we extend our prayerful support.

Dr. Killian healed in many ways. Not only was she a highly competent physician, but she healed many broken hearts and spirits through her compassionate nature. She will continue to be missed by those of us whom she helped.
