I served with Eric in Korea many, many years ago. I had stumbled on some old pictures and letters that I shared with Eric while going through some of my old boxes. It brought back amazing memories of moments that were captured between us. Eric has always been in my thoughts throughout the years, but unfortunately as time progresses and life gets busy you tend to lose touch with the people that made an impact in your life. Wanting to reconnect with Eric I found out about his passing and was thoroughly crushed. Words cannot describe the pain I feel still to this day learning that Eric is no longer here. I missed an opportunity to keep in touch and am still haunted to this day.
I am so sorry for your loss. I will never forget Eric and he will always hold a special place in my heart.

Dear Mr and Mrs Emmert,
Lt Emmert and his platoon were attached to the 302nd MP Co, which I deployed to Mosul as a member of.
I, along with at least one hundred others, responded to the hospital when the call went out for A-Pos blood.I saw each of these hardened warriors cry that night.
I can tell you that your son's name is spoken often by the members of the 302nd. He is a hero who has not been forgotten.

Dear Mr and Mrs Bill Emmert, my name is CPT Bryan OBannon of the 345th Combat Support Hospital, Jacksonville Florida. I was working at the emergency room on LSA Diamondback Mosul 24 February 2009. I was the triage officer waiting as the vehicles arrived and was quickly up into the back to assess Eric. I recall the events quite clearly and will never forget. I recall telling him that we were going to do everything we could to help him. In those few moments, I pray my words brought some peace to the panic. I think of him often and cannot imagine the loss you and so many feel. Words cannot express. Friday 24 September 2010 0234 hr, I experienced the birth of my third child. We don't find out the sex of our kids until we see with our own eyes and have names chosen for a boy or girl. Ready to go. I predicted a boy and sure enough, we now have the delight to welcome Corin Emmert OBannon to our family. May God guide and bless my son just as he did yours. Corin Emmert will grow and learn of the fine example he was named for. I am encouraged today that we will all meet again and what a joyful time it will be. May God continue to bless and comfort you.
With Kindest Regards

To Bill and Brenda. I apologize for the tardiness of this message, for I just found out today of Eric's passing. Thank you Brenda for your time today and having to revisit such a painful event in your life for my benifit. I can only say that Eric was/is a big part of my life and he will never be forgotten. He was by far one of the most dedicated and driven people I have ever met. He has left a lasting impression that will be with me for the rest of my life. I was lucky enough to have met him back in 1995 while serving together in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and can honestly say he quickly became someone that I will forever think of as my best friend. We shared the most intimate details of our lifes with each other for nearly 7 years, and it's because of him that I will be retiring from the Air Force in mere weeks. Eric spoke of you often with much love and respect. He also inspired me to stay in and serve my country during a time I was ready to give up. He showed me what sacrafice and commitment was all about and that there was nothing that should ever stand in the way of your dreams. I just wanted you to know that there is someone out there that loved your son dearly and with all her heart. Although no one can claim to be perfect, I believe he was as close as you can get. I can honestly say that 99.9% of the time we shared was flawless. The few bumps in the road were quickly smoothed over with that smile of his that could melt an iceburg and the sincereness of his heart. He was a great Soldier and friend and he will forever be honored in all my future endeavours, for it was his sacrafice that allowed me to be who I am today.
Eric, I'll never forget you. You've never left me. I've carried you with me all this time. I'll love you always. Rest in Peace my friend and I hope to meet again. Save me a spot.

Mr. and Mrs. Emmert, and family and friends of Eric,
I learned recently about the loss of your son. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
I had the pleasure of serving with your son at Ft. Jackson S.C. in the summer of 1991 while we attended Basic Combat Training together. I have some fond memories of the challenging times that we both faced. I remember Eric always helped out his platoon mates without thinking twice and through his crooked smile and Tennessee accent, reciprocated any thanks sent his way.
I will be in Nashville, TN the second week of SEPT and will make every effort to pay my respects to a great American who lost his life serving his country.
May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.
Very Respectfully,
SFC Randy Bustamante

Only today did I hear of the passing of 1st Lt. William Eric Emmert he was for a number of years my neighbor in Fayetteville Tennessee. He was a quiet man which always walked tall. I remember watching as he would come in from work. He would pull up in his patrol car get out walk to the mail box, get his mail and walk to his apartment always speaking to his neighbors as he entered his home. The thing I remember is the way he carried himself he had the walk, a military walk tall and proud. He was not a tall man but today I remember him as a tall man a hero for our nation. To his family I'm so sorry for your loss. I do want you to know I will never forget your son or the way he walked and lived and died. He was a great man.

William, God bless you soldier and thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation and for paying the ultimate price for our freedom.. You are now in great company with God and so many other fallen heroes before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward was killed in action in Iraq and my final promise to him was to never forget him and our fallen hero’s, we will never forget their commitment and sacrifice. To the Emmert family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of William and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Since the loss of my nephew I have written on every single legacy page of every fallen soldier and included a photo of my nephew. I encourage you to do the same to Aaron's page. I have done this to honor my nephew but to let you know your loved one is not alone and my nephew is with him and they are now in God's gracious hands waiting for us to join them one day. From the bottom of my heart please except my sincere condolences and may the memories of your Hero carry you through each day for he will never be forgotten!

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

My heart goes out to the family of Lt. Eric Emmert. As I personally did not have the opportunity to get to know Emmert, my husband has. My husband has spoke very highly of you son as a person and as a soldier. They have grown to be friends, brothers over the last year. My husband is with the 269th MP CO and currently is in Mosul. Our son and Eric served together for only a short time in Mosul, but I feel the need to make contact with the Emmert family. Please know that prayers for your comfort during this difficult time are being heard. No words in any human language can express the comfort you need right now. That is why we know your comfort can only be delivered through a power greater than man. God understands the death of a son, and now your son is 'face to face' in that place of honor with Him. Until the day of reuniting with our loved ones, we must trust in the Word of God and claim the promises there.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My deepest condolences on your tremendous loss. Without brave men like 1st Lt William Emmert, I would not have the freedom I enjoy every day. I feel it's my duty now to pay respect to him for his ultimate sacrifice. Please remember you're not grieving alone, other military families are sharing your pain. Final Roll Call
Did you hear the sad news today?
A brave American Soldier, 1LT William E. Emmert has passed away.
Called by the Supreme Commander over all.
Today he has made his final roll call.
Come Brothers-In-Arms; let us reverently bow and pray
For our valiant comrade, who has fallen this day.
We’ll drape his casket with a banner of beautiful hues,
Those glorious American colors: red, white and blue.
That star spangled banner he gallantly fought to defend,
Unyielding and undaunted, he fought to win.
He fought bravely and he fought his very best.
Now the Supreme Commander grants him, “eternal rest”.
With dignity and honor, we’ll commit his body to the ground,
The bugler will sound “Taps” and we’ll fire the volley rounds.
The final military honors we’ll render somberly and ever so sadly;
“Old Glory” we’ll solemnly precisely fold and reverently give to his family.
Each Memorial Day we will recall Wililliam’s name,
And attest that his supreme sacrifice was not in vain;
For this lasting legacy he gave to all generations;
“It’s honorable to respect our flag and to defend our great nation.”
So close ranks fellow warriors, for our ranks are thinning.
We must keep on fighting and keep on winning.
With pride and honor we’ll march and stand tall,
And we’ll proudly - proudly - salute “Old Glory”
‘til we join Wil at our final roll call.
Farewell 1LT William E. Emmert - Be At Ease; Rest In Peace

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 1Lt William E. Emmert our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for William. And to William it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Iraq. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. William, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to William’s family and loved ones.
