Carol Allen Obituary

CORNING | Carol L. Allen, age 77, of Corning, NY passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Robert Packer Hospital. Carol was born February 24, 1938 in Corning, NY, the daughter of the late Harry T. and Sarah G. (Finch) Hatcher.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Allen, in 2003; her brothers, William and Thomas Hatcher; and sister, Betty Lou Hatcher.

She worked for Corning Community College for 27 years, retiring in 1999. Carol was also a soldier of The Salvation Army for over 40 years, where she shared her love of ceramics by teaching others, and helped coordinate the volunteers with the monthly fund-raising dinners. Carol was always eager to visit community members who were hospitalized or anyone in need. While Carol enjoyed many activities in the outdoors, some of her favorites were watching her hummingbirds, listening to the sounds of the various wind chimes that surrounded her home, enjoying her flower beds and working in her garden. Before the death of her husband, Carol loved to go camping, fishing and boating. When Carol could not be outside, she spent her time sewing, solving puzzles, making quilts and she loved to share her canned goods with family and friends. Some of her most enduring qualities were her ability to love, finding the good in others and recognizing their strengths. Above all else, she was a faithful and Godly woman, who was a prayer warrior for those in need. She not only encouraged others to live a Christian life, she exemplified those virtues in her daily life.

She is survived by one son, Michael (Cindy) Seibert of Gales Ferry, CT; three daughters, Bonnie Purvis of Lewistown, PA, Jane (Rick Chase) Cook of Corning, NY, Sherri (Gordon Jr.) Swarthout of Beaver Dams, NY; two brothers, Charles Hatcher of Beaver Dams, NY, Ronald (Donna) Hatcher of Akron, NY; five grandchildren, Stacie Cook of Lindley, NY, Brittany Deckman and Kyle Purvis of Lewistown, PA, Andrew D. Swarthout of Wellsville, NY, Sarah D. Swarthout of Beaver Dams, NY; 5 great-grandchildren, Daivian Cook, Jade Cook, Donovan Purvis, Amara Deckman and Jenney Hess.

Family and friends are invited to call at The Salvation Army Citadel, 32 E. Denison Parkway, Corning, NY on Monday, January 11, 2016 from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm. A funeral service will be held at the Citadel on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 10:00am. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Austinburg, PA.
