Don Kirkland Obituary

Don Gray Kirkland of Owosso, Michigan, 81 and a longtime resident of Howell, Michigan, passed away in Lighthouse Point, Florida, on February 8, 2016. He was born in Corning, New York, on October 9, 1934 to Graydon and Mary Kirkland and has a surviving sister, Marlene Locey.

Don attended Painted Post High School and was a 1956 graduate of Niagara University. In 1956 Don married Pat Sweeney and was blessed with three daughters, MaryLynn, Elizabeth, and Frances.

Don met Barbara Burkhardt in Hammondsport, New York, and was married on June 6, 1964. In 1967, Don was transferred from New York to Michigan where Don became the Sales Manager for Great Western Wines and Champagnes. Together they raised their three children, Karen, Don and Graydon. Upon retiring from the beverage industry, Don brought his passion and knowledge to Meijer stores where he enjoyed helping customers discover the tastes of different wines, beers, and spirits.

Don was a man of few words but certainly enjoyed meeting new people, as well as being a friend to many. In addition to gardening, he was a train enthusiast and had a collection of miniature steam engines that he enjoyed sharing with others.

As a 50 year member of the Elks Club, first in Corning, New York and then in Howell, Don welcomed the camaraderie and fellowship. Whether at the kitchen table or sitting on the split rail fence behind his garden, Don was always one to listen or share a story with friends and neighbors.

Don enjoyed working in the yard, hosting neighborhood gatherings where he served as the Master Chef and attending Michigan State University tailgates and football games with dear friends. His love of MSU football and tailgating was passed on to his children, all three of whom are proud to call themselves Spartans.

Don is survived by his wife (51 years), Barb, children, MaryLynn Swartz (Sherman) of Baltimore, Maryland; Frances Kirkland of Baltimore, Maryland; Elizabeth Kirkland of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Karen Van Epps (Matt) of Owosso, Michigan; Don Kirkland II (Kristin), of Commerce Township, Michigan; and Graydon Kirkland (Karrie), of Howell, Michigan; twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Don leaves behind treasured lifelong friends he has enjoyed and loved throughout his life.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Child Advocacy Center of Shiawassee County, 1216 West Main, Owosso, MI 48867. A celebration of Don's life will take place at a later date.
