George Bliss Obituary

George A. Bliss Jr., 66, of Bath, NY, passed away on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Vincent House in Wayland, NY following an extended illness.

Born in Corning, NY on April 17, 1952, George was the son of George A. and Doris I. Miles Bliss. He was a graduate of Addison Central School. As a young adult, he aspired to enter the nursing field and enrolled in the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at the Horseheads BOCES, earning an LPN certification. He soon entered the nursing program at Corning Community College where he became a registered nurse. Throughout his nursing career, George continued to study and earn degrees to enhance his knowledge and abilities in the medical field. He earned another degree from Corning Community in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester and finally a Masters of Science in Business Administration at Keuka College. George was a huge advocate of education.

George began a 40 year career in nursing as an LPN and after continuing his education, started his nursing leadership career at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath where he was the Assistant Director of Nursing. After leaving there, he was employed at the Taylor Health Center and then Waterman Village as Director of Nursing. He then became the Director of Long Term Care at the Homestead in Penn Yan followed by 9 years as Nursing Executive at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital. After leaving IDM George was the Aging in Place Coordinator for the Steuben County Office for the Aging and would end his nursing career as Nursing Supervisor at Elcor Health Center in Horseheads.

George had served as a board member of various health related organizations including the Board of Directors for Home and Health Care, Inc. past President of Joint Education and Training and as a partner for Rural health Community Systems.
George is survived by his partner, John Kernan of Bath, his mother, Doris Bliss of Montour Falls, his sister, Awilda Bliss of Lauderdale, MS, his brother, Scott (Pam) Bliss of Addison, nieces and nephews, Joy Chambers, Charlene Cook, Billy Burkes and Tara Bliss, along with several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his former partner, Donald Daningburg, his father, George A. Bliss Sr., his sister, Georgia Chartrand and his grandparents, Jesse and Ica Miles and Glen and Edith Bliss.

A graveside service will be held in Woodhull Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations are encouraged to any scholastic scholarship of the donor's choosing.
