Kenneth Barnes Obituary
A native of Wilson County, he was the son of David Earl Barnes and Vetris B. Barnes. After graduating from Lucama High School and UNC-Chapel Hill, Ken spent his early working years in education. A highlight was his time at Goldsboro High School where he worked with students to produce award -winning yearbooks, school newspapers, and the literary magazine. A student remarked recently that Ken always stood for equality and justice for everyone.
Following several years in the NC Department of Cultural Resources during the first Hunt administration, Ken accepted a position with IBM. He especially enjoyed teaching book design classes at IBM sites in the US and Europe.
Known for his quick wit and generosity of spirit, Ken was a loyal friend, a passionate collector, and a lifetime supporter of the ideals of the Democratic party.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister June Carol Barnes Watkins and brother-in-law Donnie Ray Watkins.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Ann Collins Yelverton Barnes; nephew, William David Watkins and Katie Rowell.
Visitation is Tuesday April 1, 6:00-8:00 pm at Wilson Memorial Service. A funeral will be 11:00 am Wednesday April 2, at the Barnes Family Cemetery, 129 Polly Watson Road, Fremont, NC 27830.
Memorials may be directed to Meals on Wheels of Wayne County c/o WAGES, 601 Royal Avenue, Goldsboro, NC 27534 or a charity of one's choice.

Kenneth grew up in the neighborhood that I still live in. I had not seen Kenneth, I believe, since I graduated high school in 1963. I am so sorry to see that he has passed away. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
