For those of you who were unable to attend the funeral of my Dad on Saturday, October 25, 2014, here is the exceptional eulogy written and presented by my gifted son Joel for his Pop's:
My name is Joel Tubre and I am the grandson of James Arthur Tubre. I have had the honor of knowing James – Jimmy - my “Pops” for the 30 years I've been around, and as I sat to write this message, I became jealous of those who had the privilege of knowing him longer.
While writing a eulogy for a man I love and respect as much as my Pops is likely the most emotionally challenging task I've ever been assigned, I am blessed in that his life is so ripe with genuine accomplishments that the content will require no embellishment.
Jimmy Tubre was a remarkable person.
Pops was born November 21st, 1926, and lived his childhood - age three to thirteen - through the Great Depression. As exceptional people tend to do, Pops used the adversity of this difficult time in history as motivation to be better. He served in the Navy during World War II, was honorably discharged in 1946, and graduated from Southwest Louisiana with a degree in Chemistry just four years later.
He went on to co-found Besco Chemicals where he formulated commercial and industrial chemicals that sold like hotcakes because, aside from the credit my dad and Uncle Dave like to give the free pens, the chemicals were incredibly good.
When I was a teenager, I remember spotting a clear one gallon jug in our garage with less than a quarter inch of blue liquid resting at the bottom. I remember asking myself, “Why even bother?” I asked my dad the same and he told me it was a tiny amount of leftover chemicals from Pops' Besco days - we could use it for washing the car.
It was time to wash the car a few days later. Dad dropped an eraser sized droplet from the jug into a large wash bucket. I stood waiting for him to dispense more but he instead screwed the cap back on the jug and returned it to the shelf. Dad filled the four gallon bucket with water, and we proceeded to wash the entire car and refill the wash bucket three times – still filled with suds - with that solitary first drop.
It took three years to burn through that quarter inch of chemical and every time that tiny drop hit the bottom of the bucket, I remember thinking…
Jimmy Tubre is a remarkable person.

Second Corinthians 5:1 “For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

Pops was a spiritual person. He had great faith in the Lord, and his faith gives us comfort in his passing. He believed in God and he lived his life in a way that made it clear he pursued God's path and honored His teachings. Just months before his passing, Pops shared with me his certainty of angels sent to protect him through surgery. They had been there his entire life he explained. He had experienced far too many close calls for there not to be a divine hand there protecting him and guiding him along.
For those who know him, this divine intervention does not sound too farfetched. Who better for God to protect than a man as selfless and giving as my Pops? He was a man so careful with money he combed through the line items on his monthly water bill, yet he has given more to friends and family in need than anyone I know. You can say that many men touch lives before they pass, but few men affect as many lives in such a profound and selfless way as Pops.
Jimmy Tubre was a remarkable person.
Perhaps the most impressive of Pops' accomplishments is his family. Pops managed to find his perfect match in my Grandma, Betty. As our wives can attest, it takes a special person to love a Tubre because we love to pick. Pops was very gifted at picking and, much to my amusement as a child, he used his talent often. Luckily for Pops, Grandma was as good a sport as any and she could dish it out right back at him. This unique dynamic to their relationship and many others too long to list made the love shared between Pops and Grandma incredibly natural and authentic. It's a love that not everyone can experience, and those who can are truly blessed.
Along with their love came children. Jimmy and Betty combined to make three of the most exceptional people I have ever met. I have said for years that if you were to combine Steve, Mike, and David into one person they would be the ultimate human being. They are all so different in what makes them special and yet so similar in what makes them good people. The apples did not fall far from the tree and the love shared between Jimmy and his sons was unmistakable. Steve, Dave, and my father Michael are my heroes and represent the epitome of what fathers aim to leave behind when they leave this earth.
I will miss my Pops very much. I will never forget playing Bourre' with him as a child, nightly hands of solitaire, eating watermelon with the whole family on the backyard deck, watching TV on the floor while he and Grandma fell asleep in their favorite front room chairs (snoring like lumberjacks), solving newspaper puzzles every morning at the breakfast table, sharing Chinese food from Canton, shooting pool with him on a sloped table, and – depending on how many I had - drinking his famous harry navels.
I am honored and blessed to have known James Arthur Tubre, my Pops. You would be hard pressed to make up a more well-lived and accomplished life. He was the embodiment of what good men strive to be in life, family, and spirit.
Jimmy Tubre was a remarkable person.
Dad, we all miss you dearly but know you must be smiling from the beautiful ceremony that we had in your honor. Love always, Michael
