Dave Gleason was my photography teacher at Tara High School in Baton Rouge, La., in 1979 or 1980. He was a good teacher and very knowledgeable about photography. His father was also a well-known photographer in our area.

A couple of friends and I worked on a special project for Mr. Gleason (as we called him back then). The school wanted action photos of all the graduating seniors on the football team for a presentation at the end of the season. So my two friends and I went to every game that season to get the best action shots we could. We spent a lot of time in and out of class with Mr. Gleason that semester. Our off-campus meetings usually took place at a nearby Pizza Hut, where we discussed many things, occasionally even the school photography project.

Dave Gleason was cool guy, and totally a product of his time—the late 60s and early 70s. He drove an old Jeep and talked to us like we were friends, not students. I was not at all surprised to read that he ended up in Taos, New Mexico. I only recently learned of his death. But I'm sure he would say, "Better late than never, Chuck, better late than never."

So in that same spirit I would like to say, "Rest easy, Mr. Gleason. We'll catch up on the other side."
