Donald Deshotels Obituary

Donald B. Deshotels, a cherished resident of Baton Rouge, Opelousas, and Denton, TX, peacefully passed away on February 17 at the age of 91. His departure has left a profound emptiness in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him, already yearning for his captivating storytelling and contagious laughter. A devout Catholic throughout his journey, Don found immense fulfillment in his roles as a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. He treasured every moment spent with his family and friends, cherishing their companionship above all else. From a young age, Don displayed a remarkable talent for athletics, playing Baseball in high school, college, with semi-professional teams, and in the Navy. His adventurous spirit led him to proudly serve in the Navy, where he flew around the world and amassed over 800 hours of flight time, fearlessly navigating through countless perilous moments, which he recounted with great fervor through his vivid storytelling. Don was a life-long golfer who played well into his 80's. When he could no longer play, Don enjoyed watching others play from the comfort of his recliner in his home that overlooked the 18th green and clubhouse. From his recliner, Don found joy in the simplicity of watching political news networks, listening to Rush on the radio, having a beer, engaging in lively discussions about the latest political debates of the day. Family events revolved around cooking, sharing a hearty meal with loved ones, and telling a story or two. His stories are now our stories to tell in his honor. Don is survived by his children Cheryl Deshotels Cannon, David Deshotels, their spouses Shawn and Cyndi, stepson Karl Mayer, granddaughters Anna, Savannah, and Sydney, step-grandchildren Toni, Libbi, and Grant. He was preceded in death by his beloved wives Cecilia Cormier Deshotels and Emma Jean Mayer Deshotels, and stepdaughter Maureen Boudreaux. Visitation to celebrate Don's life will be held at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday, March 9, followed by services at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at St. George Cemetery in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, have a beer with friends. Family and friends are warmly invited to share their cherished memories, condolences, and messages of comfort on the online guestbook at www.resthavenbatonrouge.com, where they can leave a personal note for the family. Though Don may no longer be physically present among us, his indomitable spirit and enduring legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him and laughed with him. May he rest in eternal peace in communion with the saints.
