Eugene Rozas Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Rozas, 79, passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at his home in Baton Rouge, surrounded by his wife and family. He was a native of Avoyelles Parish. Gene graduated from LSU in 1951 and received the LSU Alumni Association Purple and Gold Award. Gene spent his entire professional engineering career with Dow Chemical Co. at numerous facilities in the U.S. and Canada. He retired from Dow Chemical Co. while at the corporate headquarters in Midland, Mich., where he was an active member of the local Knights of Columbus No. 2141. His work at Dow Chemical was interrupted for two years, when he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps at Muscle Shoals, Ala., during the Korean War. After retirement, Gene moved to Baton Rouge, and was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. During retirement, Gene was an avid hunter, enjoyed tennis, and was an accomplished skier. His passion for remaining physically fit was interrupted two years ago when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Gene was the beloved husband of Mary Frances Bergob, of Florence, Ala., for 51 years. Gene is survived by his brothers, Paul and wife Em, of Baton Rouge, and Ken and wife Trudy, of Austin, Texas; three widowed sisters, Barbara Reid, Alice Ducote and Joan Thevenot, all of Cottonport; brother-in-law, Arnold "Buddy" Bergob and wife Kathryn and sister-in-law, Dorris Bergob, all in the Florence and Birmingham, Ala., areas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elnora Rozas; sister, Rachel Gaspard; and brother, Roderic "Buster" Rozas. Gene's wife and family express their appreciation to friends, neighbors, and medical personnel, Drs. Lieux, Reine, Johnson; MBPC and St. Joseph's Hospice, all of Baton Rouge, and Dr. Julie Abbott, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70806, on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 10 a.m. The family will welcome visitors in the church one hour before Mass. A reception will be held in the Parish Activity Center adjacent to the church, immediately after Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Our Lady of Mercy church/school or Our Lady of Mercy St. Vincent DePaul, both at the church address above or your charity of choice.

Mary Frances, our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult period. I have an ex boss who was raised in Baton Rouge, went to LSU, and worked at Dow in Baton Rouge until he moved to Russellville, Arkansas to be plant manager. Jim Diamond was transferred to Texas to be the Manager of Salt Dome Operations and the Salt Mining Technology Center, where I worked for him. When he retired, he returned to Jonesboro, Arkansas, where his two sons were doctors.

Jim routinely checks the obits in Baton Rouge as he still has family there and visits frequently. Consequently he sent me the link or I probably wouldn't have know about it.

I sent it to Myrtle Cormier and also to Joe and Cele Pessarra. It has been many years since John and I have seen you, but remember the good times.

Mary Frances,
What sadness is in our hearts in Brazoria County to hear of Gene's departure. You two were such a part of our lives while you lived here.
My mom and dad, Marie and Joe Brigance so enjoyed your company and I always thought you were a perfect couple. Mama and Daddy are now gone and I know they will welcome Gene to his heavenly home. Please know that you left quite a footprint in our hearts.

We were so sorry to hear that Gene passed away. Please accept our heartfelt sympathy. We feel so blessed to have the privilege of calling him our friend. He was a special man with a very big heart. Some people never know what gift God has given them, but Gene recognized his and used the Gift of Giving in extra special ways. Our lifes have been greatly effected by his friendship and forever changed.
We wanted to do something special for you and him so we have placed/entered his name in the "Book of Remembrance".
The 'Book of Remembrance' is a book where we commemorated Gene's name while being remembered as guardians and supporters of the Church and the Christian community in the Holy Land. It is a monumental book, placed on an ornate wooden stand in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. In it are names of Christians who have been inscribed in the place where Jesus was born. The Franciscan Fathers offer prayers to bless those whose names are commemorated.
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers and we love you dearly.
