Hazel Lucille Johnson Freeman

Hazel Freeman Obituary

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center, the hourglass with its sands of time slowly spilled its contents and with the passing of the last sand went the last breath of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. Passing into eternity, when a life has been sweet for 94 years, it is as going from one room into a larger and more beautiful one. The essence of one blends itself into the beauty of the other. She was the first born of nine children to David V. and Lubirda Davis Johnson in East Baton Rouge Parish. She was a member of a close, warm, loving Christian family. She was educated in the public schools of East Baton Rouge Parish. She was a graduate of the old McKinley High School, where she graduated with honors. She received her bachelor of arts degree in education from Southern University. She was awarded a master's degree from Columbia University's Teachers College in New York. A woman of remarkable vision, fortitude, charm, grace and dignity, she worked tirelessly in her chosen profession as a teacher and supervisor of child welfare and attendance for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. She was a dedicated Christian servant of the Lord. She was baptized by the late Rev. Washington "Wash" Taylor and became a member of the Mount Zion First Baptist Church, where she remained until her death. As a very active member, she served in the following capacities: secretary of the church to the renowned Dr. Gardner C. Taylor, Sunday school teacher, president of the Sisterhood, a devoted deaconess and December Birth Month Club member. Her professional affiliations included membership in the L.E.A., N.E.A. and Educators of Yesteryear. She was a life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and a member of the Baton Rouge Delta Alumnae Chapter for 64 years. She was dedicated in serving her community as an educator, supervisor, political activist, community volunteer and contributor to the arts, civic and cultural organizations in the city. She was a founder of the Community Association for the Welfare of School Children. She received numerous awards, recognitions and certificates. She was preceded in death by her parents; only daughter, Joy Eileen Freeman Hampton; four brothers, Thomas W., Jessie L., Mack B. and Jewel R. Johnson; two sisters, Velma Johnson Tunious and, 10 days prior to her death, her sister Bertha Johnson Brown. She leaves to celebrate the legacy of her life: her son, Elvin Albert Pate Jr. and wife Barbara, of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Lugertie Johnson Whittaker, of Oakland, Calif., and Udieth "Odeal" Johnson Dotson, of Baton Rouge; three granddaughters, Germaine Pate-Thomas and husband Ronnie, of Dallas, Karla Pate McClure and husband Wesley, of Bowie, Md., and Bennifer Pate, of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandsons, Charlie Jr. and wife Kathy, Eric and wife Alexes, David and wife Jennifer, Kori, and Joseph and wife Rose Hampton, all of Seattle; 10 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, including her devoted nephew Anthony Tunious, of Baton Rouge; extended family, friends, longtime devoted caregivers, Michele Ranel and Rose Johnson; and all whose lives she touched so indelibly. Visiting at Mount Zion First Baptist Church, 356 East Blvd., on Friday, June 12, was from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturday, June 13, a Delta Sigma Theta Omega Omega Ceremony will be conducted at 11 a.m., followed by a religious service at noon, with the Rev. René F. Brown, presiding. Interment will be held in the Southern Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Scott's Bluff Morticians.

To my dear Mama Hazel,

You were the rock of our family. When we were most in need, you were always there for us. You were the one person in this world that we knew we could always depend on. You were the one person in this world that always kept us in your prayers. I will forever be grateful to you for everthing you taught us and everything you did for us. I will ensure that my Children's Children will know your name and all that you did for us in life. I will forever cherish the times we had in Baton Rouge when we came to visit you and the times we had in Seattle when you came to visit us. You gave us our identity. It is because of you and your influence that I am the man that I am today. You taught me to be a strong, upstanding young man. You taught me to walk with my head up, shoulders back, and back straight. You taught me to be proud of who I was because I was your grandson and I had your blood running through my veins. You taught me not to think that I was better than anyone but that I was just as good as anybody and beneath no one. You taught me not to be wasteful and to always eat all of the food on my plate. You taught me the Lords prayer. I thank God that he allowed you to be my Grandmother. You were a one of a kind women. There will never be another like you. The world has trully lost a special and wonderful individual. You will never be forgoten. I love you, I miss you and I know you and my Mother are in Heaven looking down on all of us.

Love Always & Forever

Eric

How do you say goodbye to someone you’ve cherished, loved and admired for over 43 years? How do you let go of a person who’s been there to impart stories, real-life experiences, advice, support and jokes for as long as you can remember?

Mama Hazel,
Thank you for all of the sacrifices you made during your lifetime to make me and my sisters the women we are today. I am and have ALWAYS been so proud to be your grand daughter. I will continue to cherish all of the precious memories I was blessed to share with you. I miss you so much already but I know you are resting peacefully in a much deserved place.

I know you will continue to guide me through this journey called “Life” in your own special way.

I Love You now and ALWAYS,

Germaine

It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of your loved one, my friend, my soror, my mentor. Hazel was a lady of dignity who carried herself with an air of sophistication that I admired. She will be missed by many because she had a way of opening up her heart to help others grow, in addition to helping those in need. We are all blessed to have touched shoulders with her.
Although I cannot be with you physically, please know that you are in my prayers. May the memories of this fine woman and the warm and caring thoughts and deeds of those who share your loss, be a comfort to you and help you find peace.

To the Johnson and Freeman families:
Your sorrow is our sorrow. You have our deep and heartfelt sympathy. Hazel Freeman always reminded me that I was in her class at the Lab School when she did her practice teaching. She was a good and decent woman and has now returned to her Maker who created her.
