John Howell Obituary

John Spencer Howell, 89, a native of Baton Rouge, died at 1:11 p.m. Sunday, (Super Bowl Sunday) Feb. 7, 2010, at his daughter's home in Gulf Breeze, Fla. He graduated from Catholic High School and attended LSU. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a real estate appraiser for the Louisiana Highway Department. He was a member of the Jazz Society and a jazz drummer in various bands in Baton Rouge and also was an avid collector of jazz music, books and art. He loved his family, LSU and New Orleans Saints football. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Janie Giroir Howell; daughter, Susan Margaret Howell; parents, Robert Blount Howell and Victoria Richard Howell; his sister, Juanita Howell Holden; and brother, Robert Blount Howell Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl Howell Bankhead and Nancy Howell Branton; his five grandchildren, James Spencer Bankhead, Michael Roy Bankhead, and Jeffrey Mark Bankhead, Stacy Branton Coco and Zachary Paul Branton; 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Visiting will be at St. Aloysius Catholic Church Saturday, June 26, from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Gerald Burns. Burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Donations may be sent to Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504.
