Lewis Miremont Obituary

A man who produced buildings throughout Louisiana which are still more vibrant, honest and fitting reflections of their functions, time and place and which reflect the highest aspirations of the institutions they represent has died. Lewis E. "Ed" Miremont of the former architectural/engineering firm of Desmond-Miremont, died Tuesday at his home in Baton Rouge surrounded by his family. He was 91. He was born in Little Rock, Ark., and was a native of Plaquemine. Visitation will be at St. Joseph's Cathedral, 412 North St., from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, January 22, followed by a memorial mass. A celebration will follow in the parish hall. There will be a private funeral and internment at a later date. He was a registered professional engineer, a graduate of LSU and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a radioman on the USS Lackawanna (AO-40), a fueling ship which was awarded nine battle stars for World War II service in the Pacific. The Oiler replenished fighting ships throughout the Pacific, most notably the invasion of Okinawa. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him, among them Linda, his wife and best friend of 35 years. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Dupuy and his five children (and spouses): Thomas (Patti), Timothy, John (Kristina), Daniel and Denise (Kevin) all of Baton Rouge. He leaves six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Leche, sisters Margaret Cazes, Mary Breaux, Jessie Pauline and a son James (Jimmy).The firm of Desmond-Miremont designed buildings that represent the highest architectural design principles possible. They represent the diversity and structure of Baton Rouge and its surroundings and are as structurally sound and imposing as the day they were built. Ed Miremont's firm worked in the areas of college buildings, campus planning, libraries, commercial buildings, public buildings, medical building, federal buildings, religious buildings, schools, residences, public housing and general planning. Some representative examples are the Catholic Life Center on Acadian Thruway, the LSU Student Union Building, the renovations and additions to the House of Representatives Alario Hall at the Louisiana State Capitol, the Southeastern Louisiana College Cafeteria. The St. Thomas More Catholic Church and School, Hammond High School campus plan and buildings, Broadmoor Methodist Church, the remodeling of St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Baton Rouge in 1968, the First Christian Church in Baton Rouge, the LSU Wesley Methodist Center, additions to Grace Episcopal Church in Hammond, the First Christian Church in Hammond, the First Baptist Church in Hammond, Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church independence, St. Pius Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Prairieville, the Tangipahoa Parish Courthouse in Amite, the Catholic/Presbyterian Apartment in Baton Rouge, the Zion City Housing Development, the Baton Rouge Civic Center complex, the Cortana Mall Regional Shopping Center, the Southeastern Louisiana University Master Plan, OLOL Regional Medical Center, the Iberville Parish Courthouse in Plaquemine and many others. The firm has received countless awards and other recognitions of superior achievement. Ed Miremont was a member of the Louisiana Engineering Society, associate member of the Louisiana Architects Association, American Architects Association, the West Baton Rouge Historical Commission, the American Arbitration Association Foundation Board, OLOL Regional Medical Center Foundation Board, a real estate broker, the Baton Rouge Country Club and a West Baton Rouge Parish Special Deputy.
