Lois Draayer Obituary

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Psalm 23:6. Lois passed into eternal life unexpectedly and tragically on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009. She will be missed deeply by many to whom she was a constant source of strength and help, most of all her beloved husband of 45 years, Jerry, and her three daughters, Leah, Sarah, and Martha. She will be remembered as beloved "Oma" by her eight grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart. Above all Lois loved the Lord Jesus and served him all her life through her gifts of hospitality, friendship, music and prayer. Lois' roots are in rural Iowa, born in Sully on Dec. 26, 1943, but she moved with Jerry to Baton Rouge in 1975. She was a 1962 graduate of Lynnville-Sully High School in Lynnville, Iowa, attended Oak Hills Bible College in Bemidji, Minn., and was trained as a licensed practical nurse in Ames, Iowa. After marrying Jerry in 1964, the couple lived in Ames, Copenhagen, Denmark, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Rochester, N.Y., welcoming their three daughters while Jerry pursued an academic career in nuclear physics before settling in Baton Rouge. In Baton Rouge, Lois enjoyed a 30-year career in real estate and was known affectionately as "Mama Lois" by her colleagues at C.J. Brown Realtors. Lois never knew a stranger and was generous to all in need. She prepared countless dinners and celebrations for Jerry's many graduate students and colleagues at LSU. She opened their home to numerous internationals, church groups, the university community, Katrina refugees and even a Nobel laureate. She served her church family at University Baptist for 33 years. Lois also served the community in numerous educational, musical and humanitarian organizations, including the Baton Rouge Symphony, the Louisiana Youth Orchestra, the Junior Great Books program, the Baton Rouge Board of Realtors, the Campus Club and Chapter K of PEO. Lois was loved by so many because she was a servant to so many. Lois was preceded in death by her father, Wilburn Van Wyk. She leaves behind her mother, Frances Van Wyk, of Sully; husband, Jerry Paul Draayer, of Baton Rouge; four brothers and sisters, Vernon Van Wyk, of Grinnell, Iowa, Bruce Van Wyk, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Louise Walling, of Austin, Texas, and Barbara Johnson, of Woodbury, Minn.; three daughters and their husbands, Leah and Patrick McDowell, of Jackson, Miss., Sarah and Brent Milligan, of Nashville, Tenn., and Martha and Kyle Duncan, of Baton Rouge; and eight grandchildren, Jamey McDowell, Claire McDowell, Ben Milligan, Anna Kate Milligan, Meghan Milligan, Joseph Duncan, Thomas Duncan, and Michael Duncan. Visitation at University Baptist Church, 5775 Highland Road, on Sunday, Nov. 22, was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visitation resumes at the church on Monday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. until service at 10 a.m., conducted by Dr. George A. Haile. Arrangements by Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St.

To the Draayer Family---I just learned today about Lois' passing and was stunned. We attended high school and the Community Church together and recall many fond memories, particularly our overnight visits at each other's homes. She was a wonderful friend in those days and pleased to know she experienced a wonderful family and community friends as well. My sympathy to you as well as to her extended family.

Dear Jerry, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your wonderful and beloved Lois. Losing her so suddenly, with no warning whatsoever, must be particularly hard for you and your daughters to accept and understand. What a tremendously courageous and giving person she was. I remember her especially for her service to an acquaintance ill with AIDs, decades ago, when we really didn’t understand the nature of that disease as we do now, and the stigma was strong for most of us. Not for Lois – she saw him through to the end. Surely she followed the example of Christ, and surely she walks with him now. What a noble woman! Now why could I not have said this to her in life? I’m sure there are things many of us would like to say to her or do for her, but now we must, regretfully but in the knowledge that she would forgive us, go forward without her. May you find strength in each other and peace in Christ.

I was very saddened to hear about Ms. Lois' passing. Though 20 years have passed since seeing her, I will never forget her. Ms. Lois always made me feel like part of the family when visiting, a gracious gesture I hope I am able to extend to my own children's friends. My thoughts and prayers go to all of you in this difficult time.

Dear Jerry and precious girls,
My heart is breaking with yours. When we moved to Houston years ago and I was tramautized over the move, Lois drove with me to Houston and helped me find a house. We spent several days together and I will never forget her compassion and friendship. During this time, Lois told me I had the "Gift of Help". That simple observation has meant alot to me all of these years. Surely, Lois not only had the gift of love and compassion, but the gift of help to all in need. I am thinking of you and sending you my love.

Our hearts have been heavy ever since we heard of Lois' passing. Her hospitality, service to God and fellow man, love and support of her family, church, friends, and community were the things come to mind as we remembered her and our association with her wonderful family. We like to think of Lois helping Jesus "prepare those mansions in heaven" for the rest of us. We are in Virginia right now, but we want all of the family to know of our love and continuing prayers for you during this time.

My dear Uncle Jerry, Cousins Leah, Sarah, & Martha. Oh how my heart is grieving with you as I cannot comprehend this unbelievable loss! Aunt Lois was so special to me - we shared the same birthday and always had a unique bond. Many of my fondest teen-aged memories were time spent with all of you over Spring Break. I wish I could be there with you personally right now to share your burden. Know that I love you all and that I loved her, too. You're in our thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace during this surreal time. Love and lots of long distance hugs go out to you and yours.

Dear Jerry, Leah, Sarah, and Martha,
We all (at CJB) loved Lois so much; she was helpful with market analyses and medical solutions -- always. She was forever a listener and so generous (presents for all of us from Africa, good advice). She loved her girls so much, and all of you are outstanding women. Her price was far above rubies. I regret not being there but Susannah will be both times. We love you all.
