Luke Elliott Obituary

A native of New Orleans and resident of Baton Rouge, he passed away on Monday, April 7, 2014, at age 90. He was a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in WW II. He served as a pilot and a pilot instructor. Following WW II, he joined what was then known as Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Beane, after working as a book keeper for Mr. Darwen Fenner. He stayed with Merrill Lynch for 41 years, and retired in 1989. An avid sportsman, he loved to fish and hunt, and introduced his son, grandson, and great grandsons to the beauty of the great outdoors. His skill and leadership were an example to all who knew him, and his fishing abilities earned him the name "Bwana". Luke was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and he and his beloved wife of 69 years were active in Engaged Encounter, Marriage Encounter, and Retrovaille. Luke and Sue were involved in their parish church, St. Thomas More, for over 50 years. For the last three years, they were in assisted living, and the family wants to express their deep appreciation for the love and support they receive at The Haven. He is survived by his wife, Esther 'Sue' Sibley Elliott; son, Luke S. Elliott Jr.; sisters, Marge Duff, Joan Hoffman, Julie Baudry; grandchildren, Clint Elliott, Emily Elliott; great grandchildren, Luke and Zach Elliott; Maggie, Morgan, and Elliott Bagot. Preceded in death by his loving parents, Luther and Marguerite Elliott; his brother, Russell Elliott; and his sisters, Frances "Chaddy" Enterante, and June Haggerty. A rosary will be said on Friday, April 11, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 8:30 a.m., followed by visitation from 9:00 a.m. until Memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Father Tom Duhe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Catholic Charities.

Uncle Luke will always have that special piece of my heart that will always be lit with his smile, laughter but most important his love. I will miss him dearly. Love Georgie

Luke and Sue have always been, are, and will continue to be the two most important people in my life. I never had the opportunity to fish or hunt with Luke. But I am very grateful I was able to enjoy some of his catchings prepared by him when invited over for dinner. He was an excellent cook; in fact he did was wonderful with any challenge presented to him. His spirituality is one thing I will always remember when I think of Luke. He was a tremendous influence in helping me to develop mine. Matter of fact I had the pleasure of participating in several Bible study groups they facilitated at their home. I'll never forget one of our discussions and someone said "Luke said this or did that or influenced this, etc." Because of limited exposure and familiarity with the Bible, I would get the impression the person was referencing Luke, the human person in our group and not "Luke" in the Bible. I finally got the courage to mention to Luke: that I was so impressed with his knowledge of the Bible and when I explained. He grinned in that humble way he seems to have always exhibited and said: But they weren't referencing me; they were talking about Luke in the Bible. I wasn't the least bit embarrassed because truly I am convinced God was speaking through Luke because He knew Luke was so filled with spirituality that others listened and heard what he had to say. My condolences to Sue and all the family.
With Love

It has been my honor to have known this great outdoors man. Because of him the very best days of my life have been spent fishing and the best of those were with Luke, his father "Deck," Luke Jr., and his grandson. Luke was a true fisher of men and will be missed sorely.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family at this time of need. I remember fondly fishing with Mr. Lucky he would catch more than anyone. Luke was a very big part of where I am today.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Bwana will always catch his limit and one day I hope to fish with him again. I am a better person today because of fishing with Bwana.
