Susan Batts Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Susan Marie Batts, a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on our lives. Susan leaves behind a legacy of creativity, laughter, and love. Susan was born to Matt and Arleene Batts in San Antonio, TX on December 17, 1946. She spent her childhood watching her father play major league baseball, which instilled a lifelong love of sports. Susan wore many hats over the years: mother and grandmother, teacher, artist, chef, and printmaker. Susan attended LSU and the University of Wisconsin, where she earned an MFA. She was an eccentric soul, an artist through and through, who saw the world through a unique lens and expressed herself vibrantly through her art. Susan had a deep love for animals, particularly rescue greyhounds. She also adored France and French culture, and dreamed of the day she could return to Paris. She embraced life with an unapologetic zest and encouraged others to as well, reminding us all to celebrate our quirks and individuality. Susan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Foster Alessi, granddaughters Madaleine Alessi and Alexandra Alessi, sister Denise Batts-Claflin, nieces Jary Claflin and Kelly Joseph, and nephew Matthew Claflin. She is also survived by her chosen family: Sue Worrell, Emily and Adam Grezaffi, Sarah Smith and Jeremy Ballard, Wes Crain, Darin Pierce, Dorothy Kelly, Anne Broussard, Donna Sims, Anthony St. Julien, Richard Ganoung and Norm Eberhardt, Diane and Dale Baringer, Charlotte Bergeron, Tim and Liza Palmer, Toody Leggio, and numerous others. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Greyhound Pets of America Louisiana/Mississippi or an animal welfare charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.

My sincere condolences. Susan will be greatly missed because of her sense of humor, generosity, hospitality, and compassion. I´m reminded of her creative beautiful spirit daily because of a painting she made and gave me. She also gave me one of her cute spirit homes. Such talent! I have so many fond memories. I´ll always remember her fun laugh and sweet smile as she was surrounded by greyhound dogs and unique cats.
