Leona Bennett passed away 7/13/2021 at the age of 77. She was a beloved
wife, mother, grammy and friend.
Leona was born in New Mexico and relocated to Colorado during her infancy.
She was the youngest of three children. After graduating from high school, she
moved to San Diego with her mother.
While working as a bank teller, Leona met her husband, Ned, who was in the
Navy and stationed in San Diego. They married in 1963 and had three daughter
who became her best friends: Brenda (Ned), Gretchen (Pat) and Melissa (Kevin).
She was a grandmother to three boys: Collin, Wyatt and Walker along with
bonus granddaughter Sarah (Tyler) and great grandkids Delainey and Brody. The family moved to Alpine, California in 1972, where she continued to reside until her passing.
Upon moving to Alpine, Leona became very involved in the community. She helped to start the Alpine Bobby Sox softball league, volunteering at games running the snack bar out of a trailer and later as scorekeeper. She was involved in fundraising for SOS (Save our Schools) during the 1970's, bringing more attention to the needs of the district in Alpine. Leona enjoyed many years teaching swim through the American Red Cross backyard swim program and was also a member for several years on the Alpine School Board, where she served time as president.
In the mid 70's, Leona began working as a mail carrier for the Alpine Post Office. She left to pursue a banking career and became a teller at Grossmont Bank in Alpine (California Bank and Trust), working her way up to Branch Manager. She later took a position as the manager of San Diego Teachers Credit Union (Cal Coast Credit Union) in La Mesa. Leona retired in 1998 to spend more time with her grandkids and help her husband in his real estate business.
Leona enjoyed reading, gardening and writing poetry. She especially enjoyed reading books to her grandchildren. She cherished time spent with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. Leona was a mentor to many throughout her life, a loyal and giving friend, and an eternal optimist with a gift for words and a natural inclination towards the encouragement of others.
Leona is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and June, her stepfather, "Pete" Peterson, her brothers, Ed and Ken.
She is survived by her husband, her daughters and grandchildren.
