Bernard Mulhern Obituary

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, our beloved Bernard (Bernie) Michael Mulhern (89) of Bowie, MD, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

Bernie was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Mulhern, and his daughter, Ann Mulhern. He is survived by his children: Maureen (Mulhern) Zeiss and her husband Scott Zeiss, Michael Mulhern, Bernard P. Mulhern, Bridget (Mulhern) Lindsay and her husband James Lindsay, Nora Mulhern, Eileen Mulhern and her fiancé Said Louafi. He is also survived by his youngest sibling, John Mulhern and his wife Arlene Mulhern, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

He was the proud grandfather of Megan Lindsay, Melissa Lindsay, Brooke Alman, and Jake Alman.

Bernie lived a life full of faith, family, and service. He graduated from Coughlin High School (1953) and King’s College (1957) in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Hayden, on July 19, 1958. He moved to Maryland in 1963 and worked for the Federal Government as a Chemist at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, MD until his retirement in 1993. The family moved to Bowie, Maryland in 1964 and have remained long-term residents ever since. Our father was a founding member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Bowie. He enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching catechism, and participating in many church activities. He served as a Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council, for over 50 years. In retirement, Bernie attended daily mass and was an usher for the Bowie Baysox. He cherished his time spent with family, relatives, and friends especially during the holidays. He was very proud of his Irish Heritage. He rooted for The Orioles, Nationals, and Redskins. Bernie loved raising his family and always put them first. His kindness, wisdom, selflessness, and caring for all will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 N.W. Crain Hwy (Rt. 3 South), Bowie, MD 20715 on Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 2:00–4:00 PM and again from 6:00–8:00 PM.

Bernie touched the lives of my entire family by singing at my mom´s funeral. He even went to her grave site and sang When Irish Eyes are Smiling. There wasn´t a dry eye there. What a beautiful sending for my mom and one that my entire family has never and will never forget. Thank you Bernie.
Bernie will be missed by many but he will forever be in our hearts, minds and prayers. Gone but not forgotten. May Bernie´s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in Peace. Amen.
