Gary Fuhrman Obituary

Gary Fuhrman, 78, of Eldersburg, MD, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Autumn House East in York, PA. Born November 18, 1946, in York, PA, he was the second son of the late Russell Leroy and Lydia (Rupp) Fuhrman.
Gary was a graduate of North Carroll High School, Class of 1965. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 during the Vietnam War and completed his service requirement while stationed at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii having achieved the rank of Specialist 5. As a beneficiary of the GI Bill, Gary attended Western Maryland College and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Following graduation, he joined Baltimore Gas & Electric's environmental engineering staff. Gary worked for BG&E for nearly 30 years and served in various roles including Director of Environmental Programs and Manager of Corporate Communications.
In 1985, he was appointed to the Maryland Executive Fellow Program where he served as the first director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Gary worked closely with Maryland Governor Harry R. Hughes' administration and contributed to Chesapeake Bay educational outreach efforts including the development of the "Save The Bay" campaign. He later served as a member of Governor William Donald Schaefer's transition team where he chaired a task force on environmental policy and the Chesapeake Bay.
Later in life, Gary taught high school chemistry in Carroll County Public Schools. He was a favorite instructor among students and was well known for "Magic Friday" where he would incorporate magic shows into his lesson plans. In his last year of teaching, Gary was selected by students to deliver the commencement address for the 2015 graduating class of Liberty High School. His son, Adam, was among the graduates in attendance.
Gary was fond of reading the paper, coin collecting, and followed Baltimore sports teams. Throughout his life, he was an active member of various Lutheran congregations where he served on church councils and taught Sunday School. He was a devoted caretaker to many animals over the years including cats, dogs, lizards, and small mammal pets.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Georgann S. Fuhrman; his sons the Rev. Matthew Fuhrman and wife Andrea of Nottingham, MD, Jonathan Fuhrman and wife Beth Heltebridle of Westminster, Shane Flynn and wife Jaime of Hanover, PA, and Adam Fuhrman and wife Lily Blanca Delgado Florez of Baltimore, MD; sisters Pamela Hartley and Rose Miller; brothers-in-law Donald and Stephen Taylor; grandchildren Anna and El Fuhrman, Bode Knox Flynn, and Benjamin Lucas Fuhrman Delgado; several nieces and nephews; grandnephews and grandnieces; and many friends. He was predeceased by infant twin daughters, his brothers Russell "Butch" and Dwight Fuhrman, and brother-in-law, Daniel Taylor.
A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, April 24th, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel at 6416 Sykesville Road Sykesville, MD 21784 with the Reverend Michael Dubsky officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends between 5 and 8 PM on Wednesday, April 23rd,2025, at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel.
