Maurice E. "Bunky" Mitten

Maurice E. "Bunky" Mitten, 88 of Jefferson, SC, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Stonecroft Assisted Living, Flat Rock, NC. Born April 21, 1937, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Maurice Daniel Mitten and Doris Irene (Garver) Mitten. He was the loving husband of the late Nancy Lassiter Mitten who died in 2023. Bunky was a 1955 graduate of Westminster High School. He then served in the US Navy from 1957 to 1961 and was honorably discharged as a 2nd class Machinist's Mate and was stationed in Norfolk, VA. He was assigned to the USS Robert A. Owens (Flagship for the 36th Squadron). He then worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital as an experimental machinist for a few years and ultimately as a career fireman with Baltimore County Fire Department serving at both the Catonsville and Randallstown stations as Lieutenant. He was a lifetime member of Gamber & Community Fire Department. Bunky also served on the Providence Cemetery Committee. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of Ionic Lodge #1435, Reisterstown and the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the NRA, SC Sheriff's Association, Carroll County Scottish Rite's Club and lifetime fishing/hunting license, State of SC. He enjoyed farming his 62 acre farm along with his wife in Jefferson, SC. He is survived by brother-in-law David L. Lassiter and wife, sister-in-law Sharon Ford, several second cousins, dear friends Terry and Brenda Houck of NC and longtime friends Rocky and Delphine Fleming and Leon and Susan Fleming all of MD and Jody and Marcia Rhyne of SC. Terry and Brenda Houck want to offer a special thank you to the staff at Stonecroft Assisted Living, especially the care provided by Nina Teasley and Micaiah Terry. Staff and residents, alike, have expressed their condolences for the loss of our dear friend, Bunky. Friends may call on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 10 to 11AM at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow at 11 AM. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery, Gamber. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
