Robert D. McElwee, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on April 4, 1934, in Maryland, Robert lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication, making a lasting impact on all who knew him.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, Robert carried this sense of duty and commitment into his career as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, where he dedicated over 35 years of service.
Robert was a devoted family man, cherished for his kindness and support. He was the beloved husband to the late Elaine McElwee. He is survived by his loving daughter Kathy and her husband Jack Sgroi, his late son Lawrence. He was a proud grandfather to Jon Sgroi and his wife Alicia, and Emily Sgroi. The joy of his life expanded with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Luca and Sophia Sgroi, who brought him immense happiness. Robert is also survived by his nephew Ronald McElwee and his wife Laura, their daughter Brittany, and many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his family, Robert was a diehard sports fan, passionately supporting the Baltimore Colts, Orioles, and Ravens. His unwavering spirit and enthusiasm will be deeply missed by all who shared in his love for sports and hometown pride.
A public viewing will be held at Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, 7110 Sollers Point Road, on Wednesday, October 1st, from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, October 2nd at 10:30 AM. A graveside service will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shriners Hospital for Children or St.Judes Childrens Research Hospital.
