Thomas Marudas Obituary

Thomas N. Marudas of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away at the age of 79 on Wednesday May 28th, 2025.

Mr. Marudas' five-decade career encompassed both the public and private sectors in the Baltimore area. He served in the cabinet of the late Mayor William Donald Schaefer. After a career in public service, Mr. Marudas worked in the private sector and was instrumental in the development of Harborview in the Inner Harbor. Subsequently, Mr. Marudas became a key aide to the late Baltimore lawyer and Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos. As part of his work with Mr. Angelos, he played an instrumental role in Westside Renaissance Inc., an organization that pushed for renewal along the corridor now home to the Everyman and historic Hippodrome theaters and helped spark downtown's residential growth. Mr. Marudas was also active in various preservation efforts and worked with Mr. Angelos to help strengthen a broader downtown partnership with the University of Maryland Medical System.

On the baseball front, in 1999, Mr. Marudas helped coordinate the O's groundbreaking baseball games with Cuba's national team. Several years later, in coordination again with the Orioles and Mr. Angelos, Mr. Marudas spearheaded an effort to help Greece field a national baseball team made up of players from the Greek diaspora for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Mr. Marudas was a longtime parishioner and past president of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in Baltimore, Maryland. A proud Greek-American, he was involved in both local and international Hellenic efforts, including having co-led a delegation during the early 1980s to establish Baltimore as a Sister City to Piraeus, Greece. One of the major highlights of his life was having the opportunity to travel regularly with his wife to Greece where they spent summers with extended family and friends. Mr. Marudas had a particular love for traditional Greek music and played clarinet in a Greek-Armenian band during his college years. He also was a consummate Greek dancer.

Born on October 28th, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Marudas was the son of Nicholas and Stavroula "Lula" Marudas and brother of the late Peter N. Marudas. Mr. Marudas grew up in a large extended family with numerous cousins on both sides. He graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit. At Wayne State, he was part of the school's Young Democrats chapter and served as an alternate delegate at the tumultuous 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Not too long after graduating from college, he moved to Baltimore to begin his career in local government and subsequently earned a master's degree in urban planning from The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. Throughout his life, Mr. Marudas continued to take a great interest in politics and was an active volunteer on various Democratic campaigns.

During his retirement, Mr. Marudas especially loved spending time with his family and four grandchildren and reading history and biographies. As both his children and grandchildren recall, he was a passionate spectator at their sports competitions and concerts. Mr. Marudas brought that same enthusiasm to his day-to-day interactions in the community and was known for making friends quickly wherever he went. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Mr. Marudas is survived by his wife Georgia C. Marudas, children Peter T. Marudas (Molly Buckley-Marudas), Stephanie M. Marudas (Dimitri Pappas), daughter-in-law Grace Lustig Marudas; grandchildren Maria Pappas, Dean A. Pappas, Lucy Marudas and Thomas E. Marudas. He was predeceased by his son, Nicholas T. Marudas, brother Peter N. Marudas, sister-in-law Irene K. Marudas and parents Nicholas and Stavroula "Lula" Marudas.

A viewing will be held Sunday June 1st from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Ruck Funeral Home, 1050 York Rd, Towson, MD 21204. Service and interment are private.

Please omit flowers. At this time, a memorial fund in honor of Mr. Marudas is currently being established.

Tom and I are related through marriage, having known one another nearly fifty years.
We had a close working relationship as Annunciation Cathedral Parish Council members in the early 1990's, and on a special commission ten years later.
He developed and expressed his ideas thoroughly; always considering those from other points of view. Being in his company was always pleasant and instructive.
In subsequent years, we frequently sought one another following Sunday worship services. While current events were on our agenda, family news was always the highlight.
Tom was faithful, caring, passionate and very competent in all that he did.
I will miss his good company and counsel.
May his memory be eternal.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Tom Marudas. I knew him to be a loyal and very competent gentleman who always returned his messages. His brother, Pete and I were good friends before he passed and Tom worked with my good friend Pete Angelos while we were doing various developments in Center City. He is missed.
